Daniel Andrews’ aim is to destroy capitalism not protect us from a virus

This is from Ronald Reagan:

“How do you tell a Communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

Just came across the quote at Ace of Spades. Had said something similar just a few days before: Ruining you is just the aim:

What seems essential for the future is that everyone becomes educated in the Leninist addition to Marxism. Lenin added into the mix how the capitalist system could be overthrown. He was a strategist. We are watching Leninist practice before our eyes.

And where we are watching all of this is in the State of Victoria. Daniel Andrews is a far-left loon. He is the leader of the Socialist-Left in Victoria. His aim in life is to bring down the capitalist system and replace it with a socialist centrally planned economy. If you understood Marx and Lenin, this would be as obvious as the morning dew. Daniel Andrews does not care about protecting the population from Covid. To believe anything he is doing is designed to protect us from this virus means you are ignorant of how a modern Marxist thinks.

I read the papers today which are filled with puzzled queries about what Andrews is up to. For example: Low blow: Covid goal too hard, says WHO adviser Dale Fisher.

A senior World Health Organisation adviser has warned that Victoria’s targets for easing lockdown are “very challenging” and the state should instead boost its capacity to manage outbreaks to live with higher infection rates.

Actually, as a means of dealing with this receding danger, what Andrews is up to is insane. As a means to damage our market economy, what he is doing is made to order. It is good news that the Prime Minister is no longer willing to put up with this any longer. Whether he is onto Andrews’ deeper aims I cannot say, but unless you understand Marxist theory and practice, you will not understand what is being deliberately done.

Surely not the nice Mr Andrews. If that’s how you think, it’s time you followed up on Reagan’s advice. The certainty is that Dan is not going to explain all this to you himself.

SOME ADDITIONAL NOTES:

I sent the post to a friend where I added this:

These guys were everywhere in the construction unions when I was working at CAI, a man named Norm Gallagher the most prominent. Just looked him up:

Norman Leslie Gallagher was a controversial Australian trade unionist, and Maoist who led the militant Builders Labourers Federation as federal Secretary and as Victorian State Secretary.

Meanwhile Andrews signs on for China’s Belt and Road and they still don’t work it out.

I have also made my way to the middle of The Oz where there was this: Victoria is reminding me of Poland in 1981. Comes with this very appropriate cartoon.

Plus this from mindfree in the Open Forum last night:

Dicktator Dan doesn’t give a shit about covid-19 infections – it’s just a tool for him to chase after the real agenda. He wants to destroy all private enterprise / business in Victoria as his dream is the perfect socialist model and that is to control all and I mean ALL aspects of our life with government and that includes national and international corporations by having his representatives on their boards to ensure they do the right thing as espoused by him or else – just like the model implemented by his CCP overlords.

He is a malevolent socio – no psychopath in his endeavour to get there. he already has the reputation of doing something I thought 20 years ago was impossible – to destroy the famous restaurant culture of Melbourne but he’s done that….

Andrews is chasing his dream which will be to the detriment of everybody. It has nothing to do with Covid-19. Sutton is a useful idiot at best and at worst loves the lock down satisfies his desire for a world of zero emissions due to climate change – his major hobbyhorse.

I think people are catching on, and none too soon.

Marxist-Leninism in Victoria

This is from Ronald Reagan:

“How do you tell a Communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

Just came across the quote today at Ace of Spades. Had said something similar just the other day but not quite as well.

What seems essential for the future is that everyone becomes educated in the Leninist addition to Marxism. Lenin added into the mix how the capitalist system could be overthrown. He was a strategist. We are watching Leninist practice before our eyes.

The point Reagan was making was the same as mine, that unless you understand Leninist principles and practice you will have no idea what is going on when you are dealing with a modern Marxist. And if you think you can reason with such people, or can point out their mistakes in the hope of getting them to change direction, you are as misguided as it is possible to be.

Daniel Andrews will drive the Victorian economy as far into the ground as he can if we let him. We are dealing with a committed Marxist (who might also be nuts but that is something of a side-issue right now).

I will just point you to something that occurred a few months back that went on before your eyes but with no general understanding of the Leninist principles that lay behind Adem Somyurek and the branch stacking story, which basically led to Somyurek – a leading member of the ALP right – being driven from a position of influence within the ALP in Victoria. Have you ever seen a political leader move so rapidly to get rid of someone on his own side from within his own government? From the ABC on which side you know they are on:

After a summer of bushfires and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews now finds himself dealing with a disaster in his own political backyard.

Andrews yesterday promptly sacked Upper House MP Adem Somyurek from his Cabinet post after the Nine Network aired derogatory comments Somyurek made about Gabrielle Williams, the Minister in charge of boosting respect and safety for women.

Somyurek also stands accused of industrial-scale branch stacking, and the use of ministerial staff for factional activities, which he denies.

My advice is that the Prime Minister do everything to ensure Daniel Andrews cannot continue along the path he has chosen. If he is allowed to continue he will bring the entire country down. He is not working for the common good. To think he is merely trying his best to deal with Covid is not demonstrated by any facts in existence.

The insane and the invisible

The insane is obvious. The invisible is the Liberal Leader of the Opposition in Victoria, in fact virtually the entire Liberal Party within the state. The whole world can see what a massive disaster is unfolding. This however is the mealy-mouthed pusillanimous statement produced by the Victorian Opposition about the arrest of a woman in Ballarat for her Facebook notice of an impending protest that the entire world has been condemning:

Thursday 3 September 2020

Statement from Shadow Minister for Police & Community Safety

Victorians across the state have been deeply concerned by footage of the arrest of a woman in Miners Rest on charges of incitement relating to a planned anti-lockdown protested in Ballarat on Saturday.

Victoria Police continue to perform an outstanding job in difficult circumstances yet the community rightly expects consistency of enforcement and everyone to be treated equally before the law.

This arrest stands in clear contrast the Andrews Labor Governments green light to 10,000 Black Lives Matter protesters in June and 250 CFMMEU members protesting at a Hawthorn East worksite in July, events which sent a clear signal to every Victorian that it is ok to protest as long as it is not against Premier Daniel Andrews.

Current COVID-19 restrictions are in place to protect the health and safety of the community. With new COVID-19 cases remaining stubbornly high and more Victorian lives and livelihoods lost every dayno one should be protesting in public or encouraging others to deliberately breach the Chief Health Officers directions.

This incident has demonstrated an unacceptable inconsistency in the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions and Daniel Andrews must now answer why it is one set of rules for left-wing and union protesters and another set for anyone critical of his government.

This is near on the most cowardly statement I have ever seen from any opposition in my life anywhere over an issue that should be infuriating anyone with a liberal soul. This is what allows Daniel Andrews to get away with murder. Where’s the outrage? Where’s the fury? Where is the defence of our freedoms? Where’s the condemnation of the grossly disproportionate actions taken by the Andrews Labor Government?

The Liberal Party owns this disaster almost as much as Labor for its profound weakness and its clear inability, as with Daniel Andrews, to understand any of the issues which are infuriating at least half the state and millions more in the rest of Australia never mind everywhere else.

Belt up, Dan, and hit the road, you communist fool

Every so often you come across something so revealing that there is little more to add once you have seen it. In yesterday’s Herald-Sun there was an article titled, “China Backs Dan deal”. Of course it does, but this is how the story opens:

Daniel Andrews has questioned Scott Morrison’s priorities and demanded the Prime Minister come up with new trade markets for Victoria if his Belt and Road deal with China is cancelled.

Let me say that so far the Prime Minister has performed miles beyond my hopes with every instinct, especially on foreign policy, near perfect. Belt and Road must go. But that wasn’t what caught my eye. This was such pure economic ignorance – that he had demanded the Prime Minister come up with new trade markets for Victoria – yet I imagine it is a view largely supported by his equally ignorant supporters.

It is how these socialist think, that it is up to governments to find overseas markets. Of course Andrews has no idea how a market economy works. Obviously this is the way he thinks, that it is up to the government to sell our produce to foreigners and to create jobs for workers. A complete klunk, but the kind of ignorance that leads to economic collapse of the kind found in Venezuela right now.

What is the Covid agenda? Do we know?

This video is about Daniel Andrews. Not literally, of course, but you watch it. If you don’t know there is a political agenda beneath all this, if you leave the lockdowns in place, and allow our freedoms to be stolen from us, you will eventually find out.

In Australia there is only one premier who is actively seeking to continue and almost certain extend this totalitarian lockdown yet it is the handling of this virus that has been more comprehensively bungled than any other premier. Look at the numbers.

New Cases Australia – 25,205

New Cases Victoria – 18,608

New Cases Outside Victoria – 6,597

Recent Deaths Australia – 156

Recent Deaths Victoria – 149

Recent Deaths Outside Victoria – 7

Total Deaths Australia – 549

Total Deaths Victoria – 462

Total Deaths Outside Victoria – 87

Why would you give this power hungry incompetent an extension of power? Now watch Tucker Carlson again.

The most absurd political entity on the planet

Let me preface this with a quote from a Letter to the Editor at the Oz.

`

I had to leave for the UK recently…. Extraordinarily, after all the tribulations leaving Australia, I entered the UK by merely sliding my passport into a slot, unmolested by bureaucrats, and emerged blinking into sunny freedom. Here I can walk outside and freely breathe the air. I can go for an evening jog. I can eat in crowded restaurants and go to concerts. I can travel anywhere in the UK or most of the world … except Australia. Quietly, the rest of our planet is getting back to normal, unwilling to continue throttling liberty and society for a virus that, yes, caused a lot of deaths, but would not have looked out of place in a reasonably bad winter.

Meanwhile back in Australia, and in Victoria in particular, we have this. And while the writer calls her a “Karen”, Mandy Crear is definitely not one of them. She is a modern secular saint, and as seen above is both handcuffed and accompanied by six members of our local constabulary, as befitting a dangerous criminal such as herself. The entire story from the Herald-Sun is reprinted below. It is titled, “Frankston ‘Karen’ anti-masker Mandy Crerar refuses to wear mask in jail, remanded again.

A Frankston ‘Karen’ is still refusing to wear a mask even as she languishes in jail on remand, a court has heard.

Anti-authoritarian Mandy Crerar was listed to apply for bail again on Tuesday, but her case was adjourned because prison staff said she wouldn’t put on a mask.

It meant custody officers at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre couldn’t take her to a media room for her online court case.

The 58-year-old had her first bail application on August 12, but that was denied because she refused to guarantee she would abide by the COVID-19 health requirements.

Ms Crerar is accused of coughing on staff at Cafe Fleur by Jen in Frankston and allegedly assaulting police because she had been refused service for not wearing a mask.

Officers say she continued to be uncooperative and refused to answer COVID-19 questions back at the station. She faces a total of nine assault, affray, resisting emergency worker and failing to comply with Chief Health Officer’s direction charges.

Her partner Andrew Lane pleaded for her to be released from custody, saying he needed her assistance around the home and he “couldn’t cope without Mandy here”.

Her defence lawyer Christopher Terry told the online court he was advised she was abiding by directives at the prison where she is being held, but that was disputed by corrections staff.

He said the 14 days she had already spent behind bars was more than she would likely receive if she was found guilty or pleaded to the charges she faced.

He said a $5000 surety and the care requirements of her partner were also factors that needed to be considered.

Magistrate Timothy Gattuso said he was not prepared to consider bail for Ms Crerar if she was not prepared to put on a mask inside jail.

“If she is saying she will do it in the community, I want to see if she is prepared to do it for a court hearing,” Mr Gattuso said.

She is listed to face online court again on Thursday, August 27.

To give Dan Andrews an extension of his powers would be a betrayal of our freedoms which is a legacy we must protect, while making Victoria the most absurd political entity on the planet.

Tense scenes in Melbourne

Among all of the many other failings Daniel Andrews has, he is also a bad liar.

There are tense scenes in Melbourne, as Daniel Andrews answers questions about him claiming one in four people weren’t at home when they were doorknocked.

Victoria Police found that less than one per cent were breaking the rules.

Mr Andrews was asked whether or not he regrets going so hard on Victorians and making it appear that so many were doing the wrong thing.

It led to a tense back-and-forth lasting almost eight minutes.

Here’s some of the exchange;

Andrews; I indicated they weren’t at home. They weren’t at home. We didn’t issue on-the-spot fines. We referred it to Victoria Police. It is their job to determine and investigate whether people had a lawful excuse not to be at home.

Just as I foreshadowed, we didn’t assume that they weren’t all doing the wrong thing. There was, as I said the time, it could be you choose not to answer the door.

You might be isolating at another house. The address for you might be wrong. It might be as [the police] put it yesterday, you might be out the back in a shed. There are lots of different reasons.

Reporter; I suppose it is misleading because a lot of Victorians assumed so many more people were breaching isolation when it is less than 1 per cent.

Andrews; Again, I’m not here to ask you questions but if I might be permitted to do that, how is it misleading to inform the community that when somebody from the army and somebody from the health department knocked on the door, there was no no-one who answered it? How is that misleading?
Reporter; I suppose it is misleading because actually less than one per cent of people were not doing the wrong thing? That’s a massive part of it?

Andrews; Well, that might be a fair point if we had said that it was our view that every single one of those people were doing the wrong thing.

Reporter; This was three days before stage 4 was announced. It was a big part of the announcement on stage 4 lockdown that – in fact, in the media release it says, “I know Victorians are with me when I say too many people are not taking this seriously and too many people are not taking this seriously means too many other people are having to plan funerals for those they love.”

Andrews; Yes.

Reporter; So I suppose that points the finger at Victorians doing the wrong thing and we now know it is far less Victorians doing the wrong thing? :We thought it could have been as high as one-in-four were breaching self-isolation. We now know it was less than one per cent. Why did you make that such a big part of your announcement during stage 4 lockdown instead of, say, that your Government’s failures in hotel quarantine?

Andrews; So, that’s the real question. I’m sorry, we were building up to that. I’ve acknowledged there have been mistakes made. I’ve set up an inquiry to give us the answers that we need. I – I think we’ve now got to the real question. And I think what I’ve done, what I’ve said all the way along is consistent…

Reporter; OK. I won’t ask about hotel quarantine…

Andrews; You can.

Reporter; Why did you blame Victorians on the day you were announcing stage 4 lockdown?

Andrews; I didn’t do any such thing

Reporter; You did use the words you were frustrated that such a large majority of people weren’t following the rules. I understand you don’t like the question but it is a valid point

Andrews; No, it is not a question of whether I like the question or not. That’s completely irrelevant, and not necessarily accurate.

Mr Andrews finished by saying; “I don’t accept the conclusion that you’re drawing about blame. I don’t accept any of those – they’re not – they’re not factual, in that they are your view.

“You’re entitled to your view, I don’t share that view. I try to be as frank and direct as I can.”

But admitting he screwed up will never be part of anything he ever says, as big a screw-up as he actually and undoubtedly is. Not to mention: Melbourne’s coronavirus testing centres idle as state records 240 cases, 13 deaths. This is how the article begins:

Thousands of Victorians have recovered from coronavirus, with the state’s active cases dropping by 2291.

There were 7155 active cases on Wednesday, but the number dropped to 4864 on Thursday.

Good news, no doubt, which only emphasises the incompetence in which CV-19 has been handled at pretty well every level. Surely someone was arguing for a more moderate approach, because if not, the whole lot of them should be replaced.

The whole world is watching

It is astonishing that Victoria, and Daniel Andrews specifically, is now internationally famous for the approach taken to deal with CV-19: Australian State Goes Full Coronafascist. When this is all finally over Victoria will be remembered as the international low point, not just for its incompetence but for the political viciousness that was applied. While Sweden may be remembered for its light-handed approach, Victoria will be remembered for its totalitarian methods, not to mention its failures at every turn. The writer of the article is English and his article is featured on a major American website. It was also sent to me by a Canadian friend so the word is getting out. This is how the article opens which goes downhill from there.

https://twitter.com/MaherRonan/status/1291028291063885827?

From this, we come to this comment:

No, this is not a scene from a prequel to Mad Max where Australia gets taken over by fascists. This is actually happening right now in the Australian state of Victoria, under the regime of power-crazed, hard left premier Daniel Andrews. (Or ‘Kim Jong Dan’, as he is known locally.

Victoria has adopted some of the strictest coronavirus rules anywhere in the world, including an 8 p.m. curfew and police roadblocks to discourage any citizens with pesky notions about personal freedom.

Police are even allowed into your home to carry out spot checks — without a warrant and without your permission.

I’ll end with this, but do go to the link to see it all:

Here — courtesy of Lockdown Sceptics — are the new rules imposed on Victoria’s state capitol of Melbourne, to be enforced for at least the next six weeks:

  • The “state of emergency” in Victoria has been upgraded to a “state of disaster”, meaning police can now enter your home to carry out spot checks even if you don’t give them permission and they don’t have a warrant.
  • Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., you’re not allowed to leave your homes except for work, medical care and caregiving.
  • Outside those hours, you may only leave your home for four reasons: shopping for food and essential items, care and caregiving, daily exercise and work. “We can no longer have people simply out and about for no good reason whatsoever,” said Kim Jong Dan.
  • Daily exercise can only take place within a 5km radius of your home and cannot last longer than an hour.
  • You cannot exercise in groups of more than two, even if they’re members of the same household.
  • Apart from daily exercise, you are only allowed to leave your home once a day for essential supplies and food.
  • In the whole of Victoria, you cannot buy more than two of certain essential items, including dairy, meat, vegetables, fish and toilet paper.
  • Schools have closed again, with all Victoria school students returning to remote learning from Wednesday (except for vulnerable children and children of permitted workers). Childcare and kindergarten will be closed from Thursday.
  • Golf and tennis venues, which were open, have now been closed.
  • Weddings will no longer be allowed from Thursday, and funerals will be limited to 10 people.
  • Face nappies anywhere outside your home have been mandatory for people in metropolitan Melbourne since July 22nd, but that rule has now been extended to the entire state of Victoria.
  • You cannot have visitors or go to another person’s house unless it is for the purpose of giving or receiving care. However, you can leave your house to visit a person if you are in an “intimate personal relationship” with them, even during curfew hours. So no “bonk ban”.
  • If you have a holiday home or were planning a holiday outside Melbourne, tough cheese. You must remain in the city for the next six weeks.
  • The maximum fine for breaching a health order currently stands at $1,652, but Kim Jong Dan said he would have more to say about penalties later today, i.e. he’s going to increase them.

We’re just used to it because we live in the middle of it all. The saddest part is that others can recognise Victoria and Dan Andrews for what they are, but we for the most part cannot.

The Daniel Andrews cult and the Melbourne Syndrome

I am astonished at the ring of endorsements for Daniel Andrews’ stupendous level of incompetence. Everything he does is filled with massive levels of stupidity which has led to failure at every stage. It is possibly because I have been onto this socialist nitwit from well before the coronavirus arrived. See, for example, Dan Andrews worse than Joan Kirner. From which:

Let’s face it. Daniel Andrews is the worst political leader, the most economically illiterate Premier, we may have ever had in Victoria and I lived through the days of Joan Kirner. When the place goes bankrupt, as it must, we will relive the 1890s collapse and then some.

Victoria is already bankrupt. Has been for a while now. We are dealing with a man of such utter vacuity that it is breathtaking. He started with this $2 billion cancellation of a road that had been proposed by the previous Liberal government for which contracts had been signed, and it has been downhill all the way since then. I can only think everyone is a socialist now and have endorsed Andrews’ policies. His monument will be the other billion dollar plus folly, the train station at The Shrine which no one will ever go to assuming it is ever actually built.

And then there’s the The Melbourne Syndrome.

Feelings of trust or affection felt during a lockdown by its victims towards their most authoritarian political leaders.

I can think of no other reason for others – even those on the supposed right – to give Andrews the pass. Andrews needs to go, and the Liberal Party needs to get a leader in Victoria able to actually present an articulate case in defence of our freedoms along with being able to put in practical policies about the virus that actually make things better and not worse.

IF ONLY I’D KNOWN WHO MIKE BAIRD WAS IT MIGHT HAVE MEANT SOMETHING TO ME: So I looked him up:

Michael Bruce Baird AO is an Australian investment banker and former politician who was the 44th Premier of New South Wales, the Minister for Infrastructure, the Minister for Western Sydney, and the Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party from April 2014 to January 2017.

And this is what he said:

Dan Andrews and I don’t agree about everything but I know that he loves his state and considers it a privilege to serve as its Premier. I formed a friendship with him during my time at COAG and saw during this period his desire to try to do what was right….

What is happening in Victoria is incredibly challenging and indeed tragic. I don’t know all the details of what has transpired but it is terrible and I think most people across the country are just waiting for some good news to emerge. Almost as if we are willing the virus away.

It is not the time to second-guess or finger point. Yes we need to be agile and learn on the run, but a pile on helps no-one.

When the dust settles, there will be time for reflection. And when mistakes are made, there will be accountability.

But in the fog of this battle, I believe we should choose to stand in support of our leaders and offer our admiration, and our thanks….

And it goes for Dan who I know is working his absolute guts out to save lives.

Let’s support him as he tries to do the impossible.

Daniel Andrews is as thick as two planks. He has not put a foot right since this CV-19 began. Mike Baird is part of the problem and like DA, is in no way part of the solution.

Was it worth it? How many lives did we save?

Letters from friends.

Of the first one, I can see how that might be true if things are looked at from within the United States. Looking at things from within Victoria, it doesn’t stand up, mostly because I think Daniel Andrews is too stupid to get to that conclusion. And I mean really dumb, not just that he is a fool. There are plenty of fools everywhere. The universities are filled with people who are high-IQ morons. They can reason and read. They can research and write. They can do a crossword and a sudoku. That is the kind of conclusion one of them might reach. But not DA. He is a union thug who just likes to push people around. He never discusses. He never debates. He never explains. And I think it’s because he works on some low-grade principle of capitalists-bad, workers-good. Lockdowns simply reflect his nature and intellect. Force is something he understands.

I will, however, say now that he has postponed the results of his Inquiry to November 6, I am beginning to see some reason to believe what you see below may be true, since the results of the Inquiry will be released following the end of the election in the United States. After that, according to this note, what happens to the Corona Virus will no longer matter. Almost certainly just a coincidence.

Thumbnail

Speaking for myself, from very early on I have entirely thought of the Covid-19 “pandemic” as a hoax that has been seized upon by the left in the United States as a means to engineer the Democrats to a win in the election in November. The origins were in China and occurred either by chance or design, but once it had occurred, the dangers were seized on and amplified by the left to create the panic we now see. Everything else the left has tried had come up a bust, the American economy has performed better than possibly at any time in anyone’s memory, the Deep State and its media cohort have been exposed, and at long last there has been some kind of border protection put in place. Trump was in an unloseable position whereas now it is no better than 50-50.

As for conspiracy theories, that is all there are in politics. Every political strategy requires all kinds of people to do their part with no scripting or instructions required. Every so often there are lone players, such as Lee Harvey Oswald. The rest of the time, however, there is a general theme that is played out where everyone on both sides understand the agenda, with those promoting the agenda all making up their own means of contributing towards its fulfilment, and those on the other side doing what they can to push back. So the theme on the left was – We must do everything we can to limit the spread of death and destruction from this deadly virus. For Trump, there was no serious choice but to take this hysteria seriously, and whatever he may have personally believed, to do all he could to limit the spread of the virus. So he stopped the borders, supported lockdowns and put Dr Fauci out in front to call the shots. The rest of the world, either because they too had no choice but to play along, which in all cases required them to do something, or because they were on the left and understood the game in play, amplified the horrors by working out their own response to highlight how bad things were and how Donald Trump had screwed up the response. Meanwhile in Democrat states, everything was done to make the pandemic appear as dangerous as possible. The actions taken in New York by Andrew Cuomo were not errors of judgement but undertaken to raise as much concern as possible.

In Australia, for whatever reason, nothing happened. No major pandemic, no deaths beyond the normal seasonal total for the flu, and no real contribution to add to the hysteria other than to suggest there was no need for it.

Which brings me to Daniel Andrews who has not for nothing been called the Andrew Cuomo of Australia. It’s not as if he blundered. Everything he has done has been deliberately aimed at creating as much media-driven alarm as possible in the midst of absolutely nothing statistically of significance. But the media are also playing along to the fullest extent they can as one would expect so you would think we were back to the Spanish flu once again.

I cannot therefore promise you that you will survive the Covid panic without some kind of damage to yourselves or families, but that is far far more likely than that you or anyone you know should come to any serious harm. The harm you should worry about, and this is much more serious than anything else that might happen, is that Joe Biden should become President. That you have had the possibility you might die within the next twelve months raised by 0.005% is hardly worthy of a moment’s thought.

And this is the second letter. This is about the cost and benefits of the efforts made to contain the CV-19. Was it worth it? he asks. How will we even be able to tell and by what date can we know? Lives interrupted everywhere.

Most of the decline in output from COVID is from shutting down the economy, not from the disease itself. What would have been the economic impact of C0VID if governments had not shut down our economies? Well, we have to make some simplifying assumptions – lets try …

  • With no government shutdowns, half the population gets covid over a period of about a year, half of those are asymptomatic. I’ve seen the asymptomatic ratio ranging from 40% to 80%.
  • Of the symptomatic quarter of the population, assume mortality is 5% (Worldometer.info estimates New York State mortality rate from verified and estimated infection is only about 1.4%. It was higher in Europe).
  • Of those deaths, most occur in the elderly cohorts. So labour force mortality (18-65 years) is less, lets say 2.5% (18-65 years). (New York State estimate would make labour force mortality under 2%). Impact on labour input is 50% infection rate x 2.5%mortality = 1.3%.
  • The symptomatic but recovered portion of the labour force, is off work for a month on average, worth 1/12 x 50% infection rate x 50% symptomatic ratio = 2.1%  of labour input.
  • So total reduction in labour input is only about 2.1 +1.3 = 3.4% for a year (assuming full employment).
  • There would be some substitution of capital for labour – about 0.5 elasticity in the long run (Knoblach et al, Oxford 2019) and less but still positive in the short run. Also some overtime and informal work accommodation.
  • On a micro/sectorial level, high mortality among the elderly would generate actuarial gains for defined benefit pension funds and actuarial losses for life insurance companies. For health plans there would be short-term losses and long term gains. Hard to say what the overall impact would be. There would be stress (even higher output) on health systems.
  • Another imponderable would be the impact on risk premia and liquidity in financial markets if there was a pandemic panic.

Bottom line: its hard to see an impact on global GDP of more than about -3% from the disease itself (-3.4% labour input with some capital and technology offsets). The forecast decline in world GDP of –5.2% this year (World Bank) means a total gap of about 8.5% (+3.3% potential growth less WB’s –5.2% forecast 2020). The global GDP decline is mostly the result of shutting down much of the global economy. Was it worth it? How many lives did we save?
