You’ll just have to get used to it

Jack Cashill: Reflections on a Century of Junk Science. He begins:

On Saturday evening I drove to a local pizza joint to pick up a pizza. This was the only way to get pizza. In Kansas City, all bars and restaurants have been closed for a week.

During the last few weeks, I had made a point of not watching or following the news. I trusted none of it. A TV at the pizza place, however, was tuned to CNN. It showed the Coronavirus death toll: 12,000-plus worldwide and 285 in the United States.

The numbers stunned me. Not following the news closely, I presumed, based on the hysteria in the air, that the numbers had to be at least ten times that high both nationally and internationally.

285? According to the Centers for Disease Control 185 Americans died of drug overdoses every day in 2018. According to the CDC, 315 people died of the flu every day during the six-month 2018-2019 flu season.

Not a lot, you would think, in a country of 350 million.

No sooner did I get home with my pizza than the news broke that the bi-state metro Kansas City would be subject to a stay-at-home order effective Tuesday morning. “After 30 days,” the TV News station reported matter-of-factly, “the jurisdictions will consider whether to extend the order.” That is how easy it is in 2020 America to suspend the U.S. Constitution and wreck the economy.

I would feel better about the order and my fellow citizens if some horrible plague were ravaging the metro. That is not exactly the case. As of Saturday night, there had been a total of four Covid-19 deaths in all of Kansas and Missouri, only one of which was in the KC metro area, a “man in his 70s with underlying health conditions.”

Did people agree with him? You must be kidding.

In sharing my skepticism on Facebook, I have been met with a hail of naysayers, some of them fellow conservatives, who insist the science justifies the state of alarm. I do not know enough about this particular phenomenon to enter that debate, but I know enough about American history to know that science often needlessly justifies a state of alarm.

Moreover, he has written a book about it.

In my 2009 book, Hoodwinked: How Intellectual Hucksters Have Hijacked American Culture, I documented a century’s worth of scientific misinformation, disinformation, half-truths, and lies disseminated almost inevitably to advance a progressive agenda.

One subject covered was the eugenics movement of the early twentieth century. Those promoting the science and paying for it were not the grand wizards of the Ku Klux Klan but America’s academics and progressives, notable among them Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Progressives have always worked in crisis mode.

Any examples? Here’s his first.

“The most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective,” wrote Sanger in 1922. “Possibly drastic and Spartan methods may be forced upon American society if it continues complacently to encourage the chance and chaotic breeding that has resulted from our stupid, cruel sentimentalism.” As we are seeing today, progressives rarely shy from “Spartan” methods.

Here’s another.

In 1968 Dr. Paul Ehrlich began his massively popular book, The Population Bomb, with the startling claim, “The battle to feed all of humanity is already lost.” In the book Ehrlich laid out three possible scenarios that could define the earth “in the next decade or so.” In the most “cheerful” of these scenarios, Americans assume an unexpected “maturity of outlook,” a new Pope “gives his blessing to abortion,” and only half a billion people die of famine.

And after denying that AIDS was a disease that attacked mainly gay men, there were then these.

The science establishment was just warming up. In the decades ahead, they would serve up global cooling, nuclear winter, the alar scare, second-hand smoke, global warming, climate change, and a host of other contrived doomsday scenarios. When the predicted doom failed to materialize, the prophets of doom shifted the date of doom forward and bought more beachfront property.

The real answer is that we will just have to get used to it.

It’s all politics

Media Continues “Hair On Fire” Behavior

It’s the flu and it’s on the way to containment. It looks like a relative handful will unfortunately die, but its not the Andromeda Strain either. If this really were the danger the media and the left pretend it is, none of these Democrat impediments to a solid response would be going on. They’re not truly scared and are merely engaged in a kind of hostage-taking excercise to leverage various outcomes they could not otherwise get. Trump has now suggested that he will call the lock-down off at the end of the fifteen days, which is March 30. Some relevant posts below

Giddy Democrats Planning to Exploit the Economic Crisis to Hurt Trump

It’s sickening to watch the Democrats exploit a public health crisis in an effort to score political points against President Trump, but they’ve made perfectly clear in the past that they’re not willing to “let a good crisis go to waste.”

Trump: ‘We Cannot Let the Cure Be Worse Than the Problem Itself’

President Donald Trump, tweeting late Sunday night in all-caps, addressed a concern of many Americans — how long will our enforced isolation last?

“WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF. AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!”

The Trump administration last week urged Americans to participate in a 15-day period to “slow the spread” of coronavirus by limiting contacts with other people and staying home as much as possible.

Trump lashes out at networks, newspapers: All I see is ‘hatred of me’

I can only hope he’s right. But there’s a lot of fear out there and to some even Joe Biden is preferable, which only shows just how mad some people are.

Might add that Cotton remains my favourite to succeeds PDT in 2024.

A parallel political universe

Up to 3200 anti-Trump emails from my mate in California – a record fifteen new ones today so he must be in lock-down. He should be in lock-up, since protection from the mad used to be one of the roles of government. Instead, they just joined the Democratic Party. I have been collecting them since I was thinking of publishing the list when it began. But there are now too many. I open around one in ten, usually filled with what I already know from The Age and Financial Review. However today was special. Much too long to read unless you really want to enter into a parallel universe: The President Is Winning His War on American Institutions subtitled “How Trump is destroying the civil service and bending the government to his will”. A good-news story, at last, I thought. Instead it begins:

When Donald Trump came into office, there was a sense that he would be outmatched by the vast government he had just inherited.

The new president was impetuous, bottomlessly ignorant, almost chemically inattentive, while the bureaucrats were seasoned, shrewd, protective of themselves and their institutions. They knew where the levers of power lay and how to use them or prevent the president from doing so. Trump’s White House was chaotic and vicious, unlike anything in American history, but it didn’t really matter as long as “the adults” were there to wait out the president’s impulses and deflect his worst ideas and discreetly pocket destructive orders lying around on his desk.

After three years, the adults have all left the room—saying just about nothing on their way out to alert the country to the peril—while Trump is still there.

The heroes here described are better known as The Deep State. Here McCabe and Comey – the very fellows who tried to sabotage the 2016 election on behalf of Obama, along with plenty of others – are the ones who have been cast aside while valiantly defending Constitutional order. Trump, by trying to govern according to the principles on which he was elected, is the villain.

It’s the weekend, and if you are not game to go to the local cafe (or you cold print this out, of course, you could do worse than to re-discover anew just how insane the left really is.

Is the Corona Virus pandemic just another scam?

On economics, I don’t trust anyone else’s judgement but my own. The Global Financial Crisis was mismanaged to such an extent that only with the arrival of Donald Trump, who knows something about how an economy works, even if only instinctively, that the US and the rest of us subsequently have moved forward.

On politics, again I don’t trust anyone else’s judgement. Our political class are such stupidoes and so bizarrely left leaning, that the kinds of things they do in almost every circumstance is plain out wrong. The public trust looks like a scam almost in everything that is touched. And with the public service entirely university-educated, I never expect political decisions to be sensible, which they seldom are.

On climate change (formerly known as global warming) I kept a watchful eye on it all until I finally decided, now quite a while ago, that it, too, is a scam. There is absolutely nothing in any of it that should be a worry.

As for Y2K, I was a sceptic way back, well before New Year’s Eve 2000. And since, I have never seen so much madness before the day, and never an apologetic word since. Utterly nothing whatsoever in it despite the five-alarm fire.

And now we are dealing with perhaps the biggest scam of them all. I know nothing about viruses and pandemics, but was a long-time student of the Black Death and Bubonic Plague. Maybe it’s early days, but so far there is nothing going on that reminds me of the days of “Bring Out Your Dead”. I keep hearing that such pandemics grow at exponential rates, and while there is hardly anything now, just wait. Except during the Black Death, from the moment it began, there was no doubting the extent of the catastrophe.

We shall therefore see. But! All below from Instapundit. May the skepticism flourish until we are certain one way or the other. Caution is important. Blind panic is madness.

THE NUMBERS JUST DON’T ADD UP TO THE CRAZY STUFF WE’RE DOING TO “BEND A CURVE” THAT WAS NEVER THAT DANGEROUS. LOOK, EVERY DEATH IS REGRETTABLE, BUT IF THE CHINESE FLU JUSTIFIES THIS, THE YEARLY FLU SHOULD HAVE US IN QUARANTINE YEAR AROUND PRETTY MUCH:  Diamond Princess Mysteries.

AND HOW:  In crisis there is opportunity, and the left wants to seize it.

THE PANIC IS WHAT WILL KILL US:  Apocalypse No.

I KNOW THIS IS GOING TO SOUND CRAZY, BUT PERHAPS THE RESULTS TO THE ECONOMY, TO THE ABILITY OF PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND AND ORGANIZE IS WHAT WAS INTENDED ALL ALONG?  Mayor of NYC Bill DiBlasio: Get Ready for a “Shelter in Place” Order For NYC Within the Next 48 Hours. I mean, as with global warming and other things, you have to ask yourself “What are these measures actually accomplishing?” And why are leftist governors scaling up/ramping up the shut downs and restrictions in the absence of anything justifying it?

THIS TO ME, TO ALLUDE TO SHERLOCK HOLMES, IS THE DOG THAT DIDN’T BARK IN THE NIGHT. I’M SORRY, IF YOU THINK THAT — IF NOTHING ELSE WITH DRUG DEALS AND HANDOUTS AND SUCH — THE PROFESSIONAL CLASS HAS NO CONTACT WITH THE HOMELESS, YOU’RE OUT OF YOUR MIND. ALSO THE HOMELESS ARE IN AND OUT OF HOSPITALS A LOT. THEY’RE “FREQUENT FLIERS”.  SO, HOW COME THEY’RE NOT DROPPING LIKE FLIES?  Another Vulnerable Population.

BUT… BUT… BUT… I THOUGHT THE REASON THIS WASN’T SPREADING IN AFRICA (MOST OF WHICH, BTW, IS NOT IN SUMMER TEMPERATURES (IN FACT ALL OF WHICH IS IN A MID-SEASON RIGHT NOW)) AND MOST BRAZILIANS AREN’T DEAD AFTER CARNIVAL WAS THAT IT DOESN’T SPREAD EVEN IN RELATIVELY WARM WEATHER. SO HOW COME CALIFORNIA NEEDS THIS?  Bay Area Issues ‘Shelter in Place’ to Stop Coronavirus From Spreading. I don’t know about you guys, but I smell several large, authoritarian rats.

ITALY IS NOT THE US. REPEAT: ITALY IS NOT THE US:  Distinguishing factors. But note even in Italy, a country that hugs, smokes, and uses public transportation, the average age of the victims of the Chinese Flu is 80 or so. My question is: What are we doing to protect those populations?  Well, not much. Sure, we closed care centers to visitors, but we still allow the nurses to go in and out, and a lot of those people have small kids who are in daycare.  As for the elders being cared for by family? Well, a lot of them still have essential doctors’ appointments as do their families. What is the quarantine doing?  It is destroying the economy. It is doing that with amazing efficiency. At which point do we ask ourselves what the INTENDED effect is?

YOU ARE BEING STAMPEDED:  COVID-19: the unwarranted panic.

AND ALSO THIS: From Scott Johnson at Powerline: Notes on the Pandemic.

Just because he’s senile doesn’t mean he can’t win

Thumbnail

This is adapted from Scott Johnson’s comment on Biden as part of the Democrat debate at CNN.

Biden made five notable pledges last night: (1) he will pick a woman as his running mate and (2) name a black woman to the Supreme Court; (3) he will ban new fracking and he’s not too crazy about oil drilling either; (4) he’s all in for the Green New Deal; and (5) he will prohibit deportations of illegal aliens during his first 100 days in office.

It is the Left agenda in spades: identity politics, anti-carbon fossil fuels and open borders. You may think this is insane and on that we agree. But if you don’t think it might draw a constituency that could win the election, on this you are wrong. It will be close in any case, but with the Corona V added in, a falling share market, rising unemployment likely and the media as ignorant and biased as ever, I still see Biden as more likely to win.

I will add some comments from the post that I think emphasise the issues that are truly telling.

“Biden made three notable pledges last night…he will pick a woman as his running mate and name a black woman to the Supreme Court.” We’re at the dreary end of affirmative action, the part where the quotas, like at Harvard, are right out in the open, and nobody even pretends to want a meritocracy, a country where you are judged by the content of your character…well, you know the drill. It’s depressing that there’s no opposition from either party for these pandering displays of racialism and sexism. In tough times, we the people need competent leadership and judgement. America is suffering from a lack of diversity. We have legions of people in positions of power with diverse skintones and of various genders. But they all think alike. I guess that’s a working definition of “groupthink.”

While they continue to pitch Biden as the throwback to the “normality” of the Obama Administration, they are simultaneously having him take radical and dangerous positions. How far left can he pander (and really follow the desires of the leaders of the Dem Party) and still be able to get general election voters to forget the crazy leftist promises he made? To a certain extent this panic over the virus is a Godsend to Biden. It will focus attention elsewhere until he gets the nomination. Will it then be too late for he and Trump to have a real debate about the future of the country? Will it be too late for the DNC to switch him out prior to the general due to mental/physical unfitness? We live in crazy times when the two doddering fools who remain in the Democratic race are considered at all for an office at any level.

This is theater in the absurd. The DNC wants Bernie to make Joe look sane by comparison but it is NOT working. The DNC is using Joe as a placeholder for whatever they have pre-designated as his VP.

And in other news today

Not sure this has become much of a news item. My how things do change: Trump Takes Out Top Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ Commander in Iraq – General Siamand Mashhadani Killed in US Strike.

Remember Soleimani? Old news, now forgotten with some of the top ruling group in Iran dying of the CV. They have even agreed to use an anti-virus vaccination even if it is invented in the Zionist Entity. But at least Nancy Pelosi still has her priorities on straight: Nancy Tried To Sneak Abortion Funding into COVID Bill and held things up while this was being negotiated.

Now what does abortion have to do with fighting a virus? Absolutely nothing, of course…. Here’s how Pelosi’s sleight-of-hand would’ve worked.

Because “testing, testing, and testing” would require the federal government reimbursing laboratories to the tune of up to $1 billion. Hence, all health claims — including abortion — could be reimbursed with federal dollars….

However, the good news is that after a day of horse-trading on FamiliesFirst, Pelosi and Mnuchin agreed to a bill that was free from abortion moneys.

Democrats are the party of death in so many ways.

Hubble bubble toil and trouble

Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble

The actual words with the key word in any case being “bubble” as in, anyone who depends on the mainstream media for the news.

The point is this. From NY Times reporter: “disdain for and distrust of the media right now is worse than I’ve seen at any point throughout this presidency”. These people lack self-knowledge to such an extraordinary level that you have to think of them as autistic to some extent at least. Do they really think of themselves as trustworthy, as people from whom we can go to for news? Go to the link to see the rest. The examples in the tweet below are precious and well-chosen, but there are many many more.

Yet I know lots of people who never read or watch anything outside their MSM bubble. It is always astonishing, but in the end, always really depressing.

Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

The modern media to a “T”.

Liars and hypocrites doesn’t even begin to cover it

The entire post taken from John Hinderaker: EXPOSING LIBERAL HYPOCRISY IS DANGEROUS. The left are loons in so many ways.

Before this New York Post story, I had never heard of Carlos Maza. But a lot of people had; he has 150,000 followers on Twitter and YouTube. Maza is a social justice warrior, and he hates rich people. This is how he describes himself in his Twitter profile: “Marxist pig. Liberal fascist. Queer scum. He/Him. YouTube profits off of hate speech. IG: gaywonk.” He has specialized in exposing the hypocrisy of rich liberals who pretend to be regular folks, in tweets like this one:

Carlos Maza 🌹

@gaywonk

Just found out James Carville — who spends his time lecturing Democrats for being “too far left” — lives in an absolutely obscene four story mansion and dear god can we STOP taking political advice from the ultra-wealthy.

Yeah, well, Carville may live in an “absolutely obscene” four story mansion, but this is just one of the luxury homes in which, it turns out, Mr. Maza himself lives, in Boca Raton, Florida:

Details at the link. Maza’s mother is the partner, to use contemporary lingo, of the founder of a successful software company, who is Maza’s de facto stepfather. They also have a $7 million condominium on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. They are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, estimating conservatively.

All of which is fine with me. But there is something unhealthy about railing against other people’s wealth–and hypocrisy!–while enjoying extreme financial privilege. Yet somehow, it is rather common–there are more socialists among the upper crust than among the working class. Maybe you can figure out why.

The most interesting aspect of this story is that Jonathan Levine, the reporter who authored the Post’s story on Carlos Maza, was punished by being locked out of his Twitter account. Exposing socialist hypocrisy is apparently contrary to Twitter’s guidelines.

UPDATE: Carlos Maza fundraises on Twitter and Patreon, soliciting donations of $2 per month to $10 per month from “comrades.” I wonder how many of those socialist “comrades” know that they are supporting–however trivially–the lifestyle of a possible billionaire.

Maths is hard

That’s why fact checking from the media is so important. That’s why it will be so important that the American media will be keeping an eye on Joe Biden.

Something is certainly self-evident but the media are unlikely to tell us 2hqt that is in regard to the Democrat candidate whoever it might be any time this side of November.
