The object of power is power

Two items have just shown up in my inbox, reminding me that the love of political power is the strongest force in human life whose effects drive agendas we normals can never understand. First Mark Steyn on Tinker, Tailor, Clapper, Carter, Downer, Halper, Spy which translated comes down to this:

Brennan and Clapper and Comey and McCabe. They took tools designed to combat America’s foreign enemies and used them against their own citizens and their political opposition. It was an intentional subversion of the electoral process conducted at the highest level by agencies with almost unlimited power. And, if they get away with it, they will do it again, and again and again. That’s what Brennan’s telling us on Twitter and Clapper on “The View”:

Yeah? So what? Whatcha gonna do about it?

Good question.

And then there’s this: T Minus Two Years for a War with China. And its conclusion:

After the war with China has started, whether in 2020 or a bit delayed, we are likely to say to ourselves that if we had known that was coming, we would have done things differently over the last two years. One important thing we should be doing right now is to have as little as possible to do with China, neither importing what they make nor letting them into the country. One of the first things the Trump administration did was to ban entry by people from countries that were sources of Muslim terrorists. China is setting out to kill a lot more Americans than the Muslims ever will. Proceed accordingly.

Things are never as clear looking ahead as looking back, and they’re not all that clear looking back either.

Watching Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck came to Freedomfest and spoke for an hour, without notes but with a tonne of props. Extraordinarily impressive, he just used a series of artefacts to structure a story about the nature of the American dream. The most interesting part was the story of Washington crossing the Delaware. His back to the wall, only 2000 troops left, he wanted to attack the Hessians on the other side of the river. But these were the best soldiers in the world at the time so it was impossible to think how he could get his men to take them on.

It was then that Thomas Paine wrote about the times that try men’s souls. He described how Paine wrote the text on a drumhead, had it printed and sent to Washington. It was this text that had the men get into those boats and fight the battle that would begin the ascent. And the way Beck began the story was to say that the picture no longer exists because it was bombed into oblivion by the British when bombing Germany in 1945!

The painting, it seems, was by a German admirer of America who hated the left revolutionaries of Europe and painted the painting in homage. The painting had never been housed in America but in Germany. It was painted in admiration of the American way of politics. That same small but important admiration of America in Europe was shared by those in France who commissioned the Statue of Liberty. The assembly of the Statue was itself a different story, since it required the skills of a man who had been railroaded into jail during the Civil War, driven into a self-imposed exile, eventually went to work in Cairo for a French contractor, and when he came back home many years later, because of his experience was uniquely able to understand how to assemble the statue because he knew how to read French industrial drawings.

American exceptionalism remains and the home of the idea of freedom that others to this day wish to share.

Are we supposed to take this “woman” seriously?

Gavin McInnes reviews Ann Coulter’s !Adios America. This is how it starts.

Ann Coulter is a withered old hag who uses shock value to sell books. Look at her face. What is she, 40? And her hair? Come on. Are we supposed to take this “woman” seriously? Her latest incarnation of Mein Kampf says Adios, America on the front but should really be called Mexicans Are Human Garbage. I haven’t read it yet but the claims she makes in the book are as disgusting as they are outrageous. It all came out on a recent appearance of Fusion with Jorge (pronounced “Hor-jay”) Ramos. As the title implies, his show brings together all kinds of different cultures into a fun plate of multiculturalism that’s like fusion cuisine for the brain. (If you don’t believe diversity is our strength, check out all the cool restaurants in New York City. You can be served by a Somalian one day, a Turk the next, and a Glaswegian in between the two.)

“Ann, if you’re reading this. Show some humanity! We are a nation of immigrants. We stole this land from the Indians.”

Ramos appeared to be focusing on Hispanics throughout the episode he had Coulter on. It was a brilliant way to expose her irrational ramblings for what they really are: Shock Hate. I haven’t actually seen the entire episode but the Internet is rife with apt descriptions of what happened. The show started out with Ann being repulsed by a Hispanic woman of color who simply offered her a hug. After that, a documented boy from Honduras tried to reach out to her and open her eyes to the dangers of prejudice and Ann barked, “You’re not black so drop the racism crap.” Her hatred for Mexicans ran so deep, she couldn’t talk to any of the audience members. Ramos rescued them from her vile bile and bravely took her on himself. He told her America was becoming more diverse and she said, “more Mexican” is not more diverse. He asked her what her problem is with 11 million hard-working people and she said the number was 3 times that! She also said they’re not as nice as we think. “If you don’t want to get killed by ISIS, don’t go to Syria” she said before adding, “If you don’t want to be killed by a Mexican, there’s nothing I can tell you.” I mean, at this point you have to just give up. Even conservatives know the Hispanic crime rate is the same as that for whites. In her world, Mexicans don’t come here for a better life. They come here to murder people.

Ann, if you’re reading this. Show some humanity! We are a nation of immigrants. We stole this land from the Indians. Mexicans aren’t doing the same to us. They’re here to help us. Do you want us to put them all on a giant bus and send them home? Grow up!

Ann Coulter on the Decline and Fall of the United States

51% of those voting in America today will pretend not to know what she means. It is even possible they may not even actually know. The US is on its final lap and it is hard to see how it can survive as anything much better than a Venezuela, although it has a lot more capital left to run down. A decade from now it will be a wreck. The economic slide is of course more than evident, but the cultural and political decline is even more pronounced but is left unstated. When it becomes impossible to say the truth as you see it because a swarm of locusts will arrive to pick your personal status clean so that you never work again, no one says anything because there is no advantage for any individual to throw their future over the cliff on some suicide mission that can achieve absolutely no good at all.

These are quotes that are to be discussed as part of “What Would You Ask Ann Coulter?” with the questioner as likely to be as obtuse as any other left media presenter anywhere.

Why isn’t he questioning the President’s patriotism? Why isn’t everyone?

I don’t wish to be mean about a people from whence some of my best friends have come, but if this presentation from Rudolph Giuliani is a revelation to anyone, Americans are beyond naive, living in a complete fantasyland. I don’t think badly about someone because of the colour of their skin, but the colour of their skin is also not a reason to like or trust them. Obama was bad news from the start, and the only surprise to me has been how far and for how long he has been able to string people along. In fact, he continues to this minute. These mild criticisms from Rudolph Giuliani have nevertheless led to a series of death threats and hysteria in the media and across the left. Giuliani has therefore now responded.

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani adamantly defended Thursday his controversial criticism of President Obama, one day after saying he does “not believe that the president loves America.”

Giuliani made the remarks Wednesday at a private fundraiser for Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is widely considered to be a prospective candidate for president in 2016. He added: “(Obama) doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.”

The comments drew widespread criticism from Democrats and liberals.

But Thursday night on “The Kelly File,” when host Megyn Kelly asked Giuliani if he wished to apologize, the 2008 presidential candidate doubled down on his criticism.

“Not at all. I want to repeat it,” Giuliani said. “The reality is, from all that I can see of this president, all that I’ve heard of him, he apologizes for America, he criticizes America. … This is an American president I’ve never seen before.”

Giuliani said he doesn’t think Obama believes in American exceptionalism, citing the president’s remarks on police tactics in the wake of the Ferguson shooting, western atrocities in the name of religion and Obama’s longtime association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a controversial Chicago pastor.

But, Kelly countered, “a lot of liberals don’t believe in American exceptionalism, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love America.”

“I don’t feel it,” Giuliani said. “I don’t feel this love of America (from Obama). I believe his initial approach is to criticize this country, and then afterwards to say a few nice things about it.”

Giuliani, however, said he wasn’t questioning the president’s patriotism.

What does a guy have to do to show that he hates America and supports radical Islam? He’s not going to tell you so you just have to work it out from what he does. It really is insane.

As bad as it is there is worse to come

Depending on America since the retreat of Britain has had its imperfections but we are in a whole new world since the coming of the Age of Obama. The article opens with a listing of the horrors of American foreign policy under Obama before coming to this:

Is there a pattern or unifying conviction that underlies such disarray?

Yes says Bret Stephens, the Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign affairs columnist. In “America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder,” he argues that the many debacles of the last six years — with the striking exception of the White House’s dogged intervention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — are tied together by Obama’s determination to scale back America’s global responsibilities. “America’s retreat — or what the Obama administration prefers to call ‘retrenchment’ — is the central fact of this decade, just as the war on terror was the central fact of the last decade,” contends Stephens. It is setting the stage for far worse.

I don’t think America has become more isolationist but it is willing to elect an incompetent and ignorant chief executive who has left wreckage everywhere he has turned. If an open borders policy doesn’t frighten the electorate enough to abandon the Democrats, I am at a loss to imagine what now will. The world map in 2114 will look nothing like the one we see today.

The green carding of America

obama jobs americans wont do

Obama cares not in the slightest about anyone else or who he harms in getting his agenda through, and this applies to the Democrats as much as anyone else. His next act of sabotage will be the issuing of 34 million green cards to illegal aliens, some already in the US and others still to come.

The only mystery I find about Obama is that anyone finds him a mystery. He has been as transparent as a sheet of glass and has been from the first moment he came into view. He is still to some extent constrained by politics and the American constitution but not by much. He has ruined the medical system, subverted the economy, ground down America’s national defence (and therefore ours as well), and is now flooding the country with millions who may never assimilate. Not much more he really could have been expected to do if his mission was to undermine the United States and the West in general.

His personal motivations are somewhat obscure but only slightly. It is either the psychological damage of his early upbringing that has left him a seething mass of hatreds, or his ideological far left cast of mind that was formed at the hands of Frank Marshall, Saul Alinsky and Bill Ayers. Some combination of the two is most likely. But the end result is an America that will never be the same as it was in 2008.

He is a political con man whose great pleasure is to laugh at those who support him as the stupid fools he perfectly well understands them to be.

America in the eyes of its domestic enemies

It is these enemies who are now running America. There are some who believe that America can be restored to what it once was. But then I think of D’Souza’s up coming trial and I say to myself, it’s all over for America, all over.

Which side are you on?

We went to see Lone Survivor last night and then we came home and I watched Canada-USA in the hockey. And while you may think the two have nothing to do with each other, let me explain.

In the hockey, Canada won it by the soccer score of 1-0. That Channel 10 chose to show the Koreans winning the speed skating while the only goal was scored took some of the pleasure away but nice to see. Sunday it’s Canada v Sweden.

And then there was Lone Survivor, the most nail-biting film of the year, as good as any movie I’ve seen over the past twelve months. The subject matter, though, has created quite a divide within the US. This is what the film is about.

LONE SURVIVOR, starring Mark Wahlberg, tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

Given the description, you will not be surprise to hear that so far as Academy Awards and other such laurels go, nothing at all. It is a major success across the Red States of America but goes nowhere in the blue states. And this is why I think that is. It is because you can only enjoy the movie if you side with the Americans. Everyone comes to the cinema with their politics fully engaged, specially a film such as this. For me and those I went with, we side with the Americans. The movie therefore completely works. For blue state America, however, it doesn’t work at all. They are disengaged and, I fear, even wish America’s enemies success. The movie is therefore an ordeal for those of a different view. This is from the review at The Washington Post:

What’s missing here is something, or rather, someone, to care about. Written and directed by Peter Berg (“Battleship”), the film presumes our emotional investment in Luttrell and his fellow soldiers’ mission, simply by virtue of — well, it’s never quite clear what. The questions of who exactly Shah is, other than one of many murderous thugs, and why we should care so deeply about his fate, is never really explained in a way that grabs the imagination.

The film must have been an endless torment to him. It’s only a film but if your instincts are not with the Americans then the film is lost on you. You are either with Team USA or you are not. In the war in Afghanistan, blue state America is not.

So when I come home to watch the hockey, no longer was I with Team USA. I have ancient views and attitudes that I bring to the match. Not quite like a Canada-USSR match of days of yore but fully engaged. And so in this film, as in so many other ways, the fifth column of Americans who were born and raised in our culture but hate it and wish to see it fail, have their attitudes engrained at such depth that it is hard to think what could ever save us now.
