Brexit and love of country vs love of personal wealth

From Quadrant Online: Feckless ‘conservatism’. From an unexpected source, the real feel for the Brexit catastrophe. Traitors everywhere in our their midst.

The UK’s Country Squire magazine (‘making country life better since 1902′) is not the first and most obvious publication in which one might expect to gain an understanding of the Brexit mess and why, three years after the electorate voted 52/48 to quit Europe, the voters’ will remains frustrated. Yet there it is in a recent edition, one of the most acute analyses of the two major parties’ drift from both base and principle, and a polarised electorate’s disgust with each and both. Author David Eyles puts it this way:

The Fabians believe in gradual change by attrition rather than open revolution. As a result of this thinking, one Labour policy was to get 50% of school leavers to attend a university. As a result, all tertiary education centres such as teacher training colleges, polytechnics and technical colleges converted to call themselves ‘universities’ more or less overnight. On paper, it gave third or fourth rate tertiary education institutions the same status as Oxford, Cambridge, the ‘Red Brick’ universities, the great northern universities and the London Colleges. A generation has now passed through this system, taught mostly by Left-leaning Postmodernist professors and lecturers. This has created an entire structure of Leftist, so-called ‘progressives’ who now dominate the Civil Service, Local Government and most of the large charities, think tanks and, importantly, the media…..

…. By contrast, the Conservatives do not really have any core philosophies except for some rather vague ones … Indeed many actions of this and the last Conservative government suggest that they are still following the path set out for them by Tony Blair. Former soldiers are still being questioned over actions for which they were acquitted many years ago. Children are increasingly being taught about sex and LGBT issues at very young ages – there is a sense that not only is their innocence being lost far too early, but that this is sowing the seeds of confusion for their adult lives. The police are questioning, cautioning and prosecuting people for “hate crimes”. Free speech is being shut down. The Conservative journey to the Left is a long one. In political distance, it is longer than the similar one undertaken by the Labour Party.

As Eyles observes, illustrating his point with the chart reproduced above,

The Conservative Party have failed the country on three counts. The first is their failure to recognise and stop what Postmodernism and the mass move to the Left amongst our establishments have achieved. The second is their own movement to the Left because they have tried to pursue the Leftist Establishment. In so doing, unforgivably, they have abandoned their core voters. The third is their failure to achieve Brexit.

Whatever else you might read about Brexit, Eyles’ insights should not be overlooked.

China has been waging war on the US for decades

This is from Bazza McKenzie, discussing PDT’s policy on China. He is replying to John Hinderaker at Powerline.

John apparently does not realize China has been waging war on the US for decades, with the intention of displacing the US as the world’s dominant nation, and doing it with the aid of a congress of traitors and Wall Street. PDJT is fighting back on behalf of the US and succeeding.

PDJT does not want or expect a deal. Any honest deal (end their mercantilist trade policy, state owned industry, IP theft and forcible IP transfer, opioid shipments to US), enforceable against China, would implode their economy. Thus they will not do it voluntarily.

PDJT is gradually imposing it on them anyway, but he is doing it at a pace which allows US supply chains to adjust without massive disruption to the US economy. Thus he goes through the motions of seeking a deal and imposing tariffs gradually but continuously. It has taken the Chinese some time to realize what he is doing because they are so used to dealing with traitorous,, self-serving politicians happy to sell out their countrymen.

At the same time PDJT is educating the public to the threat posed by China. He has already achieved strong public recognition of that and by 2020 the recognition will be stronger and China’s commiecrat candidate will be pilloried in public by PDJT for working on behalf of the enemy.

The number of people I hear mention tariffs as a major count against Trump is stunning. Managing the economy is only one part of a President’s job. Foreign policy and national defence is another, and a much much bigger part as well.

Dateless in New York

A fascinating tale: A Deplorable Looks for a Date. And as a “deplorable”, he does seem to have a redeeming feature or two:

Thomas D. Klingenstein is a principal in the investment firm of Cohen, Klingenstein, LLC and the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Claremont Institute.

Harrowing, a horror story actually, beyond imagination. This, however, is incredible.

Some conservatives would claim that my being turned down because of my politics is an example of the closed-mindedness of liberals. Perhaps. Though it may just be that conservatives like me, surrounded as we are by liberals, would end up dateless if we limited ourselves to conservatives. As an example of the liberal-conservative imbalance in New York City, in my election district on the Upper West side of Manhattan, out of 12,000 people, a whopping four voted for Trump. Two of these four, a married couple, I am friends with. The odds that the fourth is Miss Right are not in my favor.

I thought Trump’s election was itself the Art of the Impossible. Sleepless in Seattle presented a romantic challenge, but finding love and contentment for a conservative in New York seems to be beyond the widest realm of possibility. And just in case you don’t remember the movie plot:

After the death of his wife, Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) moves to Seattle with his son, Jonah (Ross Mallinger). When Jonah calls in to a talk-radio program to find a new wife for his father, Sam grudgingly gets on the line to discuss his feelings. Annie Reed (Meg Ryan), a reporter in Baltimore, hears Sam speak and falls for him, even though she is engaged. Unsure where it will lead, she writes Sam a letter asking him to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day.

My only advice to Sam if he’s meeting a reporter in New York, don’t wear your MAGA hat whatever you do.

Oliver Cromwell discusses Brexit

It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place,

which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice.

Ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government.

Ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?

Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defiled this sacred place, and turned the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices?

Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation. You were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressed, are yourselves become the greatest grievance.

Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by God’s help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do.

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place.

Go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

Just adding in one more possibility to help cloud their minds

What this did was make millions more aware of what had just happened, since the one certainty is that the media in the US and elsewhere would not mention that Iran is building rockets to deliver nuclear weapons, or that it had experienced a humiliating disaster by having a rocket blow up on its launchpad. The third bit, of course, is that by denying America had done anything he raised the possibility that they might have even though they almost certainly didn’t. This is taken from Instapundit and found hardly anywhere else. What you don’t know really can hurt you.

No one, not even Trump, has ever successfully trolled at this level before.

I am in awe.

The will to murder Jews did not come with the founding of Israel

https://twitter.com/Imamofpeace/status/1164029605235179520

Do you have any doubt that these women – Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib – not only wish to entirely remove the present Jewish population of Israel but would murder them if they could? Is there any doubt that they represent a very large numbers of others who all wish to do the same?

So let me bring in this 90th Anniversary of Arab Massacre of Jews in Hebron and Safed, which I particularly wished to include as a reminder that Jews were living in what is today Israel well before the founding of the Israel in 1948, well before the end of World War II in 1945, well before the Holocaust which began at the start of the 1940s, and well before the election of Hitler as Chancellor in Germany in 1933. This massacre, which was hardly the first of its kind, occurred in 1929. Israel was founded in 1948. The hatred and will to murder Jews did not come with the founding of Israel.

Ninety years ago, in 1929, Arabs went on a murderous anti-Jewish rampage in the British Mandate for Palestine, ransacking ancient Jewish communities in Hebron and Safed (Tzefat). In the course of the week, a total of 130 Jews were dead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1929_Hebron_massacre#/media/File:Hebron_massacre_newspaper.jpg

We covered the 1929 Hebron Massacre in 2016, Anniversary of 1929 Hebron Massacre and Ethnic Cleansing of Jews:

Hebron is a hot spot in many ways. Hebron and its immediately surrounding Arab areas are the single largest source of terror attacks during the so-called Knife or Stabbing Intifada.

It’s also a place where anti-Zionist and left-wing “liberal Zionist” American Jews love to gather to protest the Jewish “settlers” who live in a tiny section of the city. That section is under Israeli military control by agreement with the Palestinian Authority, with good reason. Hebron has a long history of violence directed at Jews.

Hebron also is the place of the Cave of the Patriarchswhich I visited in 2015.

Hebron had one of if not the oldest continuous Jewish communities in the world, dating back several hundred years at least. Until 1929.

On August 23, 1929, the Arabs attacked the Jews of Hebron along with numerous other Jewish communities.

But in Hebron it was particularly vicious. It was a blood frenzy in which the Jews were set upon with particular glee and slaughtered with knives, machetes and anything else available.

This old Palestinian woman remembered the massacre fondly:

Interviewer: Please tell us who you are.

Sara Jaber: I am from Hebron. The Jaber family.

Interviewer: What is your name?

Sara Jaber: Sara Muhammad ‘Awwadh Jaber.

Interviewer: How old are you?

Sara Jaber: I am 92.

Interviewer: So you remember May 15, 1948, the day of the Nakba.

Sara Jaber: Why wouldn’t I remember? May Allah support us. I hope we forget those days. Allah willing, you will bury [Israel], and massacre the Jews with your own hands. Allah willing, you will massacre them like we massacred them in Hebron.

Interviewer: What does this day mean to you? You have lived 63 years since the Nakba. You have experienced the entire Nakba…

Sara Jaber: 92 years. That’s 92. I lived through the British era, and I lived through the massacre of the Jews in Hebron. We, the people of Hebron, massacred the Jews. My father massacred them, and brought back some stuff…

Interviewer: Thank you very much.

What’s changed since then other than that the Jews now have the means to defend themselves against such evil. The question really is whether I&T intended to bring a peace proposal with them on their trip to Israel. If not, why not? And if they have one, where is it?

And just for added emphasis on how bad things now are, this is from The Simpsons.

PLUS THIS: Another telling of the Hebron story, with additional detail.

This land is my land, this land is Greenland

From the icy tundra
To the icy tundra
This land was made to protect the Arctic from the Russians and the Coms

From out of left field it definitely is, but filled with sense and sound political instincts. Also taken seriously here, if a bit whimsically: YES TO ACQUIRING GREENLAND!, although mostly taken seriously among the comments:

Why is no one talking about PDJT’s true motivation, which is to keep the Chi-coms out of the Arctic? They have already approached Denmark with the idea to build airports there. The Danes may think they’re too smart to fall for a BRI swindle, but that’s irrelevant. Their Navy isn’t nearly as impressive as it was 1000 years ago, and their sovereignty over Greenland is only as strong as their armed forces. They should sell it while someone is still willing to pay.

Greenland is not a part of Denmark, it is a dependent territory with some self rule. Offer each family in Greenland $1Mil and have them vote on it. It could acquire status similar to Guam or PR, if not statehood. And yes, Greenlanders most certainly feel looked down upon by “mainland” Danes. BTW, it would not be the last real estate transaction between the 2 countries. US bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917.

China apparently tried to build 3 airports in Greenland recently, an obvious threat to the US. Also, the US is trying to check Russian efforts to gain strategic and economic control of the Arctic. It may not be long before Denmark has no choice in the matter. If Denmark were smart, they’d negotiate a percentage of mineral and tourist revenues.

I connected the dots yesterday when I read an article about a speech Pompeo recently gave to the Arctic Council about the need to defend the Arctic from Russian-Chinese encroachment. It mentioned that Greenland has a claim under international law to a huge swath of the Arctic and surrounding ocean. It also revealed that Democrat hero and MSM icon Truman formally offered $100 million for Greenland for the same reason, but was turned down.

Denmark only holds Greenland because of NATO. Without U.S. security guarantees it would be part of the Soviet Union today. (Without U.S. security guarantees there would be a Soviet Union today.)

Politics as a fashion statement

True story.

She: Who did you see at this Conference?

Me: Nigel Farage.

She: Who’s he?

Me: The leader of the Brexit Party.

She: Yuck! I hate Brexit.

There is no arguing with such people since argument and reason have nothing to do with it. She knows nothing and if I actually try to say anything to her she says she is absolutely uninterested in politics which is clearly untrue. Wilfully ignorant and dead to any discussion contrary to her present beliefs. An extremely nice person, one of the most treasured people in my life, but made up her mind not ever to examine any issues on her own, but just to see what’s going in her own personal circle of friends and then get on with life.

Yet she endangers herself, her children, her wider family and friends. She does the same for my children, my family, my wider circle of friends. She cannot be talked to, will never listen to a thing. There is no possibility of engaging her in any discussion or opening up, even remotely, the possibility of seeing things in a different way. Being on the left is the one and only way she believes that kind and considerate people think. Doing otherwise is, to her, despicable. I remain close to her only because I never push my ideological luck in any conversation. Not only would she not read my Art of the Impossible on Donald Trump, not only would she not open the book to any page, she point blank refused to hold the book in her hands.

It is not, of course, the other way round. She can say what she likes to me, never fears I will cut her out of my life. She is certain of her virtue. Nothing disturbs her, not the millions who have died at the hands of totalitarians, not the horrors that are caused by socialists, not the deaths and misery due to various forms of terrorist activities, not the dangers of radical Islam. Impregnable in her certitudes, she is shocked that anyone can support Donald Trump. Thinks that people like him and me are the cause of the world’s political and social evils. Never anything to do with people such as herself.

There are millions and millions and more millions of others just like her. She had a great time on her visit to Cuba a couple of years ago.

CPAC Australia day two

Just a brief post before I put my weary bones to bed after a night of carousing, conservatively, at the end of the second very full day of the very first Australian Conservative Political Action Conference. So overloaded with interest that by the time I was listening to Nigel Farage at the dinner at the end of the night, it was hard to believe that we had heard him for the first time only that morning. The most striking conclusion from the two days is how obvious a conservative disposition is as the way to face our difficulties, and how obvious conservative political conclusions are as the means to remedy the problems our communities face. Centralised fixes for our problems will, to larger proportions of our populations, no longer seem like anything other than ways to make such problems worse.

I will just put up three quotes from the dinner, and then say more tomorrow.

First, from Nigel Farage, talking about the certainty that Brexit will happen because the people of Britain will not let the British political class prevent it (said in an Australian accent).

“We won’t let the bastards get away with it.”

From Mark Meadows, the head of the Republican Freedom Causus in the US House of Reps, in discussing the absolute imperative to fight for one’s principles if we are to succeed:

“if you can’t make them see the light, you must make them feel the heat.”

Lastly, Mark Latham:

Conservatives have been so used to defending the existing social order that they have not yet realised is that what they have now been forced to do is to start fighting against the existing social order.”

The fact that CPAC has come to Australia is not just a sign that we are no longer going to take this rapid shift to a globalised elites-and-deplorables status quo, but that the rest of us are determined to roll it back, and restore the nation state and traditional small-l liberal values to the centre of our political culture.
