The paradox of the survival of Keynesian theory

The picture above comes with this article: America is Regressing into a Developing Nation for Most People.

America is not one country anymore. It is becoming two, each with vastly different resources, expectations, and fates.

In one of these countries live members of what Temin calls the “FTE sector” (named for finance, technology, and electronics, the industries which largely support its growth). These are the 20 percent of Americans who enjoy college educations, have good jobs, and sleep soundly knowing that they have not only enough money to meet life’s challenges, but also social networks to bolster their success. They grow up with parents who read books to them, tutors to help with homework, and plenty of stimulating things to do and places to go. They travel in planes and drive new cars. The citizens of this country see economic growth all around them and exciting possibilities for the future. They make plans, influence policies, and count themselves as lucky to be Americans.

The FTE citizens rarely visit the country where the other 80 percent of Americans live: the low-wage sector. Here, the world of possibility is shrinking, often dramatically. People are burdened with debt and anxious about their insecure jobs if they have a job at all. Many of them are getting sicker and dying younger than they used to. They get around by crumbling public transport and cars they have trouble paying for. Family life is uncertain here; people often don’t partner for the long-term even when they have children. If they go to college, they finance it by going heavily into debt. They are not thinking about the future; they are focused on surviving the present. The world in which they reside is very different from the one they were taught to believe in. While members of the first country act, these people are acted upon.

The article is about a book by Peter Temin who has put his finger on the great problem facing the whole of the West. But then he has also co-authored this: Why Keynes is Important Today. He argues that the problem is that there is too much saving.

Keynes’ paradox of thrift showed that the actions of individuals and economies are different. If one person wants to save more, he or she can do so by simply reducing spending. But if everyone wants to save more, or at least enough people and business firms to influence the whole economy, then their collective reduction in spending reduces national income. The economy does not save more. Instead production and jobs decrease. If everyone tries to do this in all countries, then global unemployment emerges, which is an international paradox of thrift.

He sees the consequences of an economy of dependency but remains wedded to the Keynesian ideas which are the actual heart of the problem. I you want a paradox, this is it.

Memorials of what we no longer remember

As it happens, when we were in France many years ago we tried to find the Tours battlefield and what was truly extraordinary, in this vast tourist office in Tours itself, only one person even knew what I was talking about. There is no designated battlesite and if there is, no one will now tell you where it is.

And then, when we went to Krakow this year, we not only specifically went to see Jan Sobieski’s tomb (it’s in the cathedral next to the castle), we went to see his statue in the park next to central station, where there is not only a quite old statue but there is a second, gold plated, that was just put up last year showing him leading his army into Vienna! At least some people still get it.

Why Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals won’t work for the right

Here are a selection from Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals that only work for the left and cannot be applied by the right. And the reason they don’t work is that the left by and large have no principles, only an empty sentimentality that allows them to line up behind their power-hungry leaders without any ability to see the consequences of what their leaders actually do. These people are unteachable. They have learned nothing from all of the revolutions that have gone wrong which have imprisoned and impoverished all of their supporters while making their handful of leaders wealthy and powerful beyond any other possibility they might originally had. Look t this list and try to find any leverage at all in dealing with the left.

4. “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules.

5. “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.

11. “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.” Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog.

12.”The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem.

13. “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

The problem:

1. The left have no principles, only tactics.

2. The mentality of the left is founded on the self-righteous belief that everything they do is pure good based on their pure intentions, and will therefore never listen to or accept they have ever done harm or are at fault about anything.

3. Violence is the prime tactic of the left.

4. No member of the left is ever embarrassed about anything done on its behalf by any of its leaders.

OK, but what have you done for me lately?

If you are not grateful that Trump is president, you are, whatever you may personally believe about yourself, a non-card-carrying member of the left. Political ingratitude seems to know no bounds, nor does the expression the art of the possible have any genuine meaning to you. This is what Trump has already done. This isn’t my list but was picked up on a comments thread. There are lots of other items I’m aware of as well, including sacking the Director of the FBI. But this is far more than anyone could have realistically achieved, not to mention that if anyone else had run, Hillary would be president.

RUSH LIMBAUGH UPDATE: I spent a lifetime in politics and learned there to appreciate the small mercies of the occasionally good government. Reading the comments thread does make me think there are a fair few with nooooo idea about politics with the cowardice and inanity which is its regular fare. Just think Malcolm and you will see what I mean. Meanwhile, back in the USA we are looking at the most extraordinary and potentially positively transformative presidency in certainly the past century. Here’s Rush’s take: Limbaugh: Can We Take A Moment And Appreciate How Epic Trump Presidency Is?

https://youtu.be/Kr7HZHhS6Sk

He can’t get Obamacare turned over in 100 days. Well the Libs couldn’t put in a $5 Medicare surcharge. If you cannot see how extraordinary these past weeks have been your opinion is not worth a plug nickel. And if you really want to be riled, have a go at his address to Liberty University which I sat through last night watching it live: Trump: ‘In America we don’t worship government, we worship God’. And here’s the full speech for, shall we say, the true believers.

Trump’s Rules for Conservatives

Same as Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals except they are applied by us.

The Rules
1. “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.” Power is derived from 2 main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood.

2. “Never go outside the expertise of your people.” It results in confusion, fear and retreat. Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone.

3. “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.” Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty.

6. “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.” They’ll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They’re doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones.

7. “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.” Don’t become old news.

8. “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new.

9. “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.” Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist.

10. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.” It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign.

A straight no fake news interview

Read Donald Trump’s Interview With TIME on Being President. Nothing there but Q&A. Humility is not however one of his virtues. An example:

On foreign policy

You know what’s interesting, I’m getting very good marks in foreign policy. People would not think of me in that light. I’m just saying, and you read the same things I read. I’m getting As and A+s on foreign policy. And nobody thought about it.

On forging relationships with foreign leaders

Great relationship with [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel, one of the best. In fact so good she invited my daughter over. She loves Ivanka. Ivanka was over there and did great. But no I have a very good relationship with all of them, including Australia. You saw that the other night, right. You know they all said I hung up and I slammed the phone on him. I didn’t do that. I mean, it was a little testy for a while because Obama made a ridiculous deal. But that wasn’t [Australian Prime Minister] Malcolm [Turnbull]’s fault. But we have a very good relationship with Australia and him. Which I think the other night showed.

…I get back [former Egyptian prisoner] Aya [Hijazi]. Nobody could have done that. Nobody else could have done that. They could have negotiated – how tough is [Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah] el Sisi, right? Nobody else could have done–and he’s a great guy. Nobody else could have gotten her back. She would have been in jail for twenty-eight years. And that’s not twenty-eight years you’re going away for one. That’s twenty-eight years meaning twenty-eight years.

Malcolm must be the one stand-out for having had to deal with idiocy if he mentions him in the interview.

Meanwhile, Trump discusses Comey last night on NBC.

Marriage advice for millennials

I happen to agree with him. Not getting married by your late twenties is a bad idea, and not having children if you can is a much worse idea. But turning 70 without someone you’ve already been with for thirty-five years is the worst idea of all. And as an extra piece of advice for people who come to sites like this, for heaven’s sake don’t date anyone who votes for parties of the left.

Left bots get their news from comedians which is why they are so ignorant

Is Comey a bad guy – he stopped Hillary from becoming president – or is he a good guy – investigating Trump’s Russian connection? Expect not honesty, consistency or common sense from the left who get their lead from comedians. Politics on the left is just a fashion statement. This is a paradigm example of how the left instantly falls into line with whatever is supposed to be the politically correct response to any event. This is from Twitchy: BACKFIRE alert! Audience reaction to Comey firing NOT what Stephen Colbert wanted.

On the Late Show, Stephen Colbert broke the news to his audience that Donald Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey, and their reaction was not what he hoped for.

Dems have gone back and forth on Comey so much even Colbert’s fans are unsure how they’re supposed to react on any given day.

Almost exactly the same from the Puffington Host even, also picked up by Twitchy: BACKFIRE alert! Audience reaction to Comey firing NOT what Stephen Colbert wanted.

Stephen Colbert opened his Tuesday night “Late Show” with the news that President Donald Trump had abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey.

The audience immediately started to clap and cheer at the news, leading Colbert to quip that there were “huge Donald Trump fans here tonight.”

Colbert’s guest on the show, Jon Stewart, later discussed the audience’s bizarre reaction to the Comey news.

Within minutes the entire left knew its lines and how to act in unison by following their national socialist leaders. This example from history shows how it was done then as it still is.

And the words – via the voice-over translator – are uncanny in their opposition to democracy, liberty and free speech.

A COUPLE OF ADDITIONS: The left remains a mystery in their self-destructive ways. Two examples worth your time. The first from Ann Coulter: TO SAY, ‘STOP RAPING ME!’ IN ENGLISH, PRESS ‘1’ NOW. The second from QoL: Mark Steyn, Cole Porter and Free Speech. This is an historic first, where a civilisation has disintegrated because its inhabitants hated its own values. I hope these cretins like what comes next better than what they are helping to see off, but my guess is they won’t. But their offspring will not know any better so in a hundred years no one will understand how pleasant our way of life was since no one will be able to believe we had what we had and gave it all away.

Fixing problems one by one

But will eight years be enough?
