Memorials of what we no longer remember

As it happens, when we were in France many years ago we tried to find the Tours battlefield and what was truly extraordinary, in this vast tourist office in Tours itself, only one person even knew what I was talking about. There is no designated battlesite and if there is, no one will now tell you where it is.

And then, when we went to Krakow this year, we not only specifically went to see Jan Sobieski’s tomb (it’s in the cathedral next to the castle), we went to see his statue in the park next to central station, where there is not only a quite old statue but there is a second, gold plated, that was just put up last year showing him leading his army into Vienna! At least some people still get it.
