Thought of this last night but someone has already been there. It is surprising that more has not been made of the possibility that Hillary was in cahoots with the moderator although I can see that this is not the time for a distraction of this kind. The lessons of the first debate have no doubt been absorbed. Remembering The Sting may require you to be of a certain age. A fantastic film if you haven’t seen it with a surprising degree of relevance in the present election.
The text that came with the chart is unsourced but quite interesting:
The blackout of the entirety of South Australia is a poignant lesson as to why wind power is nonsense.
You will hear from a whole heap of truth deniers trying to protect the eco-crucifix industry by saying that the blackout had nothing to do with the fact that Labor has made South Australia completely reliant on renewable energy for its power.
But the cold hard fact is that the knockout of a transmission tower would not have stopped power being generated by a decent network with reliable coal-fired baseload power. What knocked out the power was the fact that every wind turbine powering South Australia ceased to operate as soon as wind speeds reached a critical level. They cannot produce power when there isn’t enough wind and they can’t produce power when then there’s too much wind. The proof: this graph showing wind power energy production in South Australia yesterday.
Thank God we aren’t reliant on those useless, bird-chopping wind turbine monstrosities here in Queensland.
I have now seen this South Australian story told round the world but in a way that suggests that this is just one of those really idiotic things that happened one time in some out of the way place in Australia. Really only mentioned for a laugh. Yet the people who did this are everywhere and wherever you find them they really are incapable of seeing and understanding cause and effect, but are filled with emotion about some remote possibility 50 to a 100 years from now. Unfortunately there is worse to come before it is better.
The front page of The OZ: Interest rate cuts losing power: RBA. The premise is that there was a time that interest rate cuts had done some good, but if so, that was only when they had been set too high. If you would like to understand why interest rates can be too low, and have been much too low everywhere for quite a long time, you should look at the last two chapters of my Free Market Economics. But the main message is that the era of low interest rates is over. Let me therefore take you two articles on the same theme.
The first is Yellen helps Clinton dodge a bullet which comes with the sub-head: “Federal Reserve policymakers keep their key interest rate steady, putting the central bank on the sidelines until after Election Day.” The first sentence of the article is merely about politics. The economics is about what lies in wait. But first that opening sentence:
Scratch one big economic worry off the list for Hillary Clinton.
The worry being scratched off is that interest rates will be raised before the election. Trump knows what a problem this would be for the Democrats better than anyone. Yellen knows exactly what Trump knows, but says the thing which is not like the rest of her leftist tribe:
Fed Chair Janet Yellen also strongly rejected claims lobbed at her by GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump that she is keeping rates artificially low to boost stock prices and aid Democrats.
“I can say emphatically that partisan politics plays no role in our decisions about the appropriate stance of monetary policy,” Yellen said at a news conference after the Fed announced its decision. “We do not discuss politics at our meetings and we do not take politics into account in our decisions.” . . .
“The Federal Reserve is not politically compromised,” she said. “I can’t recall any meeting that I have ever attended where politics has been a matter of discussion. I think the public if they had been watching our meeting on TV today would have felt that we had a rich, deep, serious, intellectual debate about the risks and the forecasts for the economy.”
Since she cannot say otherwise, that was the pre-fab answer. But they of course do think politically 100% of the time, and know full well what will happen when rates start to rise, or even if they hinted that they would rise. It will happen immediately if it’s Trump, more slowly if it’s Hillary, but up they will go. As noted at the end of the article:
The decision [to leave rates where they are] should be a bit of a boost for Clinton, more because it avoids a nightmare scenario than does much to strengthen the economy.
“Nightmare scenario”? What could they possibly mean?
There is then this second article dealing with the same issues: Yellen rejects Trump charges that Fed plays politics. Shorter and again outlines Trump’s complaints in the company of Yellen’s untruths. But it ends with this:
By statute, the Fed is an independent body intended to be shielded from political pressure and whose operations are not funded by the US Congress.
But Fed governors are nominated by the White House and approved by the Senate.
You can see the cynicism in the article but there is even more in the comments to the story. I will just list one, which is like most of the others, and which follows more or less my own sentiments about all of it:
Her denial proves the point. Yellen is a marxist who does Obama’s bidding. If Trump wins in November this fool will raise interest rates in December. Bet the farm on it.
For all that, the sad fact is that the only way our economies can ever get on track is for rates to rise. It will be a rough ride, but without the redirection of savings in productive directions, there is no chance of a recovery either short term or long.
If he isn’t the dumbest, least informed, least capable president in history, he must come close. Reading almost anything he says or does is a trial on the nerves. How do others take it? A sample from today:
It’s hard to work out whether his ignorance is more significant than his lack of intelligence, or whether it is the other way round. But whichever it is, he cannot be gone soon enough. In ’08 I thought anyone but Hillary, so this was the answer and I learned my lesson. Although not much better, she would have been better. That he is still the apple in the eye of the media is all you need to know about the American media, which is as ignorant and unintelligent as Obama.
I HAVE RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING COMMENT ON THIS POST: Source unknown, but entirely apt:
“The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president.”
The original post on The Flight 93 Election was exceptional, and if you haven’t read it yet, you should read it now. The writer, who goes under the pseudonym Publius Decius Mus, has written a follow-up which is even better. Because of the wide circulation of the original, it attracted an immense amount of criticism from all the right sorts of people. He titles his follow-up, Restatement on Flight 93 in which he picks up the various criticisms of the first article and replies to them one by one in ascending order of importance. This is where the second article leads, but all of it should be read:
If Hillary wins, there will still be a country, in the sense of a geographic territory with a people, a government, and various institutions. Things will mostly look the same, just as—outwardly—Rome changed little on the ascension of Augustus. It will not be tyranny or Caesarism—not yet. But it will represent, in my view, an irreversible triumph for the administrative state. Consider that no president has been denied reelection since 1992. If we can’t beat the Democrats now, what makes anyone think we could in 2020, when they will have all the advantages of incumbency plus four more years of demographic change in their favor? And if we can’t win in 2016 or 2020, what reason is there to hope for 2024? Will the electorate be more Republican? More conservative? Will constitutional norms be stronger?
The country will go on, but it will not be a constitutional republic. It will be a blue state on a national scale. Only one party will really matter. A Republican may win now and again—once in a generation, perhaps—but only a neutered one who has “updated” all his positions so as to be more in tune with the new electorate. I.e., who has done exactly what the Left has for years been concern-trolling us to do: move left and become more like them. Yet another irony: the “conservatives” who object to Trump as too liberal are working to guarantee that only a Republican far more liberal than Trump could ever win the presidency again.
It is a depressing article but what do you know that makes what he describes seem anything other than the most likely outcome we face? But what continues to get me is not just the outright lying but the willingness throughout the media to lie on her behalf, which is followed by an exceptional willingness to accept these media lies as the good-enough truth. People want to feel good about themselves, and don’t wish to see they are supporting a corrupt and dishonest whose only principle is never to tell the truth.
The incredible defensive formation within the media following Hillary becoming ill is amazing, since its dishonesty is unmistakeable. These are lies designed only for those who do not wish to face the truth and need comfort rather than facts. When it really comes down to it, who’d have thought that 1984 was an instruction manual? I thought I would have a look at what the papers said about Hillary’s health just to see how it was discussed, but I have to say I did think it would be discussed. To my astonishment, there was not a single negative word about the entire episode in The Herald Sun, The Age or The Australian. The blogs, moreover, have been virtually wiped clean of any such mention even in those few instances where it was mentioned at all. Hillary falling ill has been a one-day wonder, allowed to be mentioned, it seems, only because the video evidence could not be suppressed, at least not on the net. A spot of pneumonia which she will be over in a tick and that is that, unless it was dehydration. Here are the mentions from what are now yesterday’s papers.
In The Australian:
Hillary Clinton says she feels better after falling ill at a 9/11 memorial ceremony, insisting she never lost consciousness and that her pneumonia diagnosis was too insignificant to disclose before hand.
Put enough nonsense out there and some of it might just collide with a fact – and thats what happened on Sunday when Hillary Clinton’s apparent kerbside collapse in New York became a video that can be run as an endless loop with internet claims about every real and imagine ailment that must surely disqualify her from the presidency.
The Herald-Sun ran a mini-story on page 2 under the heading Clinton Health Scramble, but really, that so-called right of centre columnist, Rita Panahi, put it perfectly under the heading “Hillary can’t handle her own truth”. The point is that because Hillary is such an inveterate liar whose word can never be trusted, she gets caught out on those odd occasions when she is actually telling the truth:
Despite the myriad conspiracy theories about her health issues it is possible that she is perfectly healthy and that the occasional episode of ill-health are normal for a 68-year-old woman taking part in a gruelling campaign.”
That she might actually be ill, as well as ill-prepared to be president, there is not a word. But just to remind you what we read yesterday on Drudge, where, I might note, there is no follow-up of any kind today. Here is yesterday’s news which has really, for all practical purposes, disappeared.

If even a tenth of this applied to Trump, the stories would be all front page and endless. Amazing to have seen how the coverage went. Interesting to understand the times in which we live. Here is the video one more time which you can look at until it finally also disappears for good.

The quiet that surrounds Obama’s mismanagement of every aspect of American society may have reached a moment of resistance in a rare agreement between Republicans and Democrats. You may not even know the internet is in need of saving, but this a story that is worth pondering, not just for what it says about the issue itself, but about the governance of the United States when in the hands of Democrats. The story from The Wall Street Journal: Congress Can Save the Internet which comes with the sub-heading, “The White House will end U.S. oversight at month’s end, unless lawmakers step in.” We are used to the freedom of the internet but that is not a future given.
President Obama wants this to be the last month of an open, uncensored internet guaranteed by the U.S. government. His plan to end American stewardship would hand new power to authoritarian governments offended by the internet as we know it. . . .
“This irreversible decision could result in a less transparent and accountable internet governance regime or provide an opportunity for an enhanced role for authoritarian nation-states.” . . .
The broader point is that the internet ain’t broke and doesn’t need fixing. Icann’s stakeholders—developers, engineers, network operators and entrepreneurs—are free to operate an open internet because U.S. protection prevents Moscow, Beijing, Tehran and other authoritarian regimes from meddling. The Obama administration may not be comfortable with American exceptionalism, but the internet fosters free speech and innovation because it was built in the image of the U.S.
Obama will do as much damage as he can before he is finally on his way. If you are interested in freedom of speech, you have to be interested in this.

The Roughest Week…
It’s the “press left in dark” which really is the joke. Everyone knows that Hillary is a very sick woman and is in no condition to be the President of the United States. This is the media supporting Hillary to the bitter end. You cannot trust the media, but if they can, as unfit in so many ways as she is for the presidency, they will see her win. This is the death of democracy, and the media are the surest symptom of its collapse in the US. They have covered for Obama for the past eight years and will do the same for Hillary if they can. Democracy depends on an informed electorate. The American media is no longer a free press, although with the internet the flow of information is no longer as controllable as it once was.
Republican Donald Trump made his most direct appeal yet Tuesday for black voters in the presidential race, pushing forward an agenda to restore law and order and revitalize inner-city neighborhoods that he said suffer from years of misguided Democratic policies.
In a speech delivered not far from Milwaukee neighborhoods rocked by anti-police riots, Mr. Trump laid the blame for urban despair and conflict between police and minorities at the feet of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“I am running to offer you a much better future,” Mr. Trump said in a speech in West Bend, Wisconsin. “Crime and violence is an attack on the poor and it will never be accepted in a Trump administration.”
He said the policies holding back minority neighborhoods were part of the “rigged system” led by Mrs. Clinton, who he said pandered to black voters but didn’t really care about their suffering.
“The political class that Mrs. Clinton has been a part of for 30 years has abandoned the people of this county. They only care about themselves,” he said. “I am going to give the people their voice back.”
And there’s more at the link. There is also no doubt he means it. What has disappeared into history is that the entire Ku Klux Klan was Democrat. This really does look like America’s last chance, but it’s a genuine one.
