Flattening the curve is now one year old

For context see Nation Prepares To Celebrate 1st Anniversary Of Two Weeks To Flatten The Curve. This is the first article of my own I can find on the Chinese flu, dated February 28, 2020: Coronavirus, the economy and the American election, the story thus far …. This is the text:

Whoever does the plot lines for our world is astonishingly creative but does tend to be highly melodramatic. So this is where we are. Our economies are coming good, the virtuous if eccentric Donald Trump is getting on top of things with some of the best economic outcomes in generations. Meanwhile, the Democrats go into self-destructive mode, creating a set of rules accompanied by a large crew of incompetents who allow not just anyone, but an out-and-out communist to take first place in the race for the nomination. In almost every conceivable circumstance, the communist must lose, unless there is a major recession. But then, just in time, along comes the coronavirus, knocking supply chains out of kilter across the world, with this coronavirus business looking like it might really create an international recession just in time for the election.

There is no doubt now looking back that the agenda that has unfolded since then was what was planned from the start. There is then this from March 18, 2020: Is the Corona Virus pandemic just another scam? This is the text:

On economics, I don’t trust anyone else’s judgement but my own. The Global Financial Crisis was mismanaged to such an extent that only with the arrival of Donald Trump, who knows something about how an economy works, even if only instinctively, that the US and the rest of us subsequently have moved forward.

On politics, again I don’t trust anyone else’s judgement. Our political class are such stupidoes and so bizarrely left leaning, that the kinds of things they do in almost every circumstance is plain out wrong. The public trust looks like a scam almost in everything that is touched. And with the public service entirely university-educated, I never expect political decisions to be sensible, which they seldom are.

On climate change (formerly known as global warming) I kept a watchful eye on it all until I finally decided, now quite a while ago, that it, too, is a scam. There is absolutely nothing in any of it that should be a worry.

As for Y2K, I was a sceptic way back, well before New Year’s Eve 2000. And since, I have never seen so much madness before the day, and never an apologetic word since. Utterly nothing whatsoever in it despite the five-alarm fire.

And now we are dealing with perhaps the biggest scam of them all. I know nothing about viruses and pandemics, but was a long-time student of the Black Death and Bubonic Plague. Maybe it’s early days, but so far there is nothing going on that reminds me of the days of “Bring Out Your Dead”. I keep hearing that such pandemics grow at exponential rates, and while there is hardly anything now, just wait. Except during the Black Death, from the moment it began, there was no doubting the extent of the catastrophe.

We shall therefore see. But! All below from Instapundit. May the skepticism flourish until we are certain one way or the other. Caution is important. Blind panic is madness.

THE NUMBERS JUST DON’T ADD UP TO THE CRAZY STUFF WE’RE DOING TO “BEND A CURVE” THAT WAS NEVER THAT DANGEROUS. LOOK, EVERY DEATH IS REGRETTABLE, BUT IF THE CHINESE FLU JUSTIFIES THIS, THE YEARLY FLU SHOULD HAVE US IN QUARANTINE YEAR AROUND PRETTY MUCH:  Diamond Princess Mysteries.

AND HOW:  In crisis there is opportunity, and the left wants to seize it.

THE PANIC IS WHAT WILL KILL US:  Apocalypse No.

I KNOW THIS IS GOING TO SOUND CRAZY, BUT PERHAPS THE RESULTS TO THE ECONOMY, TO THE ABILITY OF PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND AND ORGANIZE IS WHAT WAS INTENDED ALL ALONG?  Mayor of NYC Bill DiBlasio: Get Ready for a “Shelter in Place” Order For NYC Within the Next 48 Hours. I mean, as with global warming and other things, you have to ask yourself “What are these measures actually accomplishing?” And why are leftist governors scaling up/ramping up the shut downs and restrictions in the absence of anything justifying it?

THIS TO ME, TO ALLUDE TO SHERLOCK HOLMES, IS THE DOG THAT DIDN’T BARK IN THE NIGHT. I’M SORRY, IF YOU THINK THAT — IF NOTHING ELSE WITH DRUG DEALS AND HANDOUTS AND SUCH — THE PROFESSIONAL CLASS HAS NO CONTACT WITH THE HOMELESS, YOU’RE OUT OF YOUR MIND. ALSO THE HOMELESS ARE IN AND OUT OF HOSPITALS A LOT. THEY’RE “FREQUENT FLIERS”.  SO, HOW COME THEY’RE NOT DROPPING LIKE FLIES?  Another Vulnerable Population.

BUT… BUT… BUT… I THOUGHT THE REASON THIS WASN’T SPREADING IN AFRICA (MOST OF WHICH, BTW, IS NOT IN SUMMER TEMPERATURES (IN FACT ALL OF WHICH IS IN A MID-SEASON RIGHT NOW)) AND MOST BRAZILIANS AREN’T DEAD AFTER CARNIVAL WAS THAT IT DOESN’T SPREAD EVEN IN RELATIVELY WARM WEATHER. SO HOW COME CALIFORNIA NEEDS THIS?  Bay Area Issues ‘Shelter in Place’ to Stop Coronavirus From Spreading. I don’t know about you guys, but I smell several large, authoritarian rats.

ITALY IS NOT THE US. REPEAT: ITALY IS NOT THE US:  Distinguishing factors. But note even in Italy, a country that hugs, smokes, and uses public transportation, the average age of the victims of the Chinese Flu is 80 or so. My question is: What are we doing to protect those populations?  Well, not much. Sure, we closed care centers to visitors, but we still allow the nurses to go in and out, and a lot of those people have small kids who are in daycare.  As for the elders being cared for by family? Well, a lot of them still have essential doctors’ appointments as do their families. What is the quarantine doing?  It is destroying the economy. It is doing that with amazing efficiency. At which point do we ask ourselves what the INTENDED effect is?

HOW MANY OF THEM ARE IN CHINESE PAY?  Liberal Media Melts Down After Trump Tweets ‘Chinese Virus’.

YOU ARE BEING STAMPEDED:  COVID-19: the unwarranted panic.

Mass media now means mass stupidity.

Political football

Only once a year do I watch an American football game and that is for the Superbowl which was yesterday. That is Tom Brady, the quarterback for the winning team which has disappointed everyone on the left, including this: Tom Brady Called ‘Racist’ on Social Media for Winning Super Bowl During Black History Month. I also thought this was funny in its own sad way:

Well that Super Bowl was a throwback to the lopsided boring games of the 1980s. But it might not be over. Even though the NFL stopped counting points when the clock ran out, I am reliably informed that there will be 12 mail-in touchdowns for the Chiefs coming in tomorrow morning at 4 am, putting the Chiefs over the top.

I was the only one in the pub where I watched who even noticed the game was on. But a good time was had by all, or at least by me.

Monogamy and civilisation

“British ethnologist and social anthropologist at Oxford University and Cambridge University, Joseph Daniel Unwin MC (1895 – 1936) conducted a massive study of 6 major civilizations and 80 lesser societies covering 5,000 years of history. He set out his study expecting to find evidence supporting Sigmund Freud’s theory that civilizations are essentially neurotic and destroy themselves by restricting sex too much. But to Unwin’s surprise, all the evidence he discovered pointed exactly to opposite conclusions. In his exhaustive examination of sexual behavior and their affect upon society, Unwin observed that monogamous cultures prosper and those disinclined to restrain sex to monogamous marriage remain primitive or, if once successful, they decline.”

That quote is found here.

And from Unwin’s Wikipedia entry we find this:

After a nation becomes prosperous it becomes increasingly liberal with regard to sexual morality and as a result loses its cohesion, its impetus and its purpose. The effect, says the author, is irrevocable. Unwin also claimed that legal equality between women and men was a necessary prerequisite to absolute monogamy.

Are we to be the first to beat the odds? There are so many other reasons to think we are seeing the end of Western Civilisation that we can just add this one in.

Might add that I have only come across Unwin since I am doing a paper on Huxley’s Brave New World, and it turned out that Huxley wrote an introduction of one of Unwin’s later books. Sexual licence to the fullest degree was found in the dystopia Huxley had conjured up. The book oddly reads as if it was based on our world today even though having been written some ninety years ago.

…but before I fade away, there is something important I need to say. It may not be important to anyone else; but it’s important to me. Win, lose or fraud…President Trump, I just want to say thank you for the last four years. Thank you for making it cool to be an American again. Thank you for showing us that we don’t need to be under China’s thumb anymore economically, or any other way. Thank you for one of the strongest economies we’ve ever experienced in my lifetime. Thank you for all you have done for the minority communities, and the outstanding decrease in the unemployment rate you had. Thank you for making it feel good to love our country and to be a proud patriot again. Thank you for supporting our Nation’s flag and the men and women who fought for the freedom that stands behind that flag. Thank you for supporting our nation’s law enforcement organizations, and understanding how difficult their job really is. Thank you for quelling the flood of illegal immigration, and bringing to justice the thousands of criminals that flood brought us. Thank you for giving corporations a reason to come back to America to make our own products and put Americans back to work. Thank you for bringing our troops home from endless deployments that presented us with little more than body bags; and for your commitment to strengthen our military. Thank you for operation warp speed and keeping your promise to bringing the Covid 19 vaccine to us in less than a year. Thank you for your never-ending attempts at bringing peace to the Middle East and your support for Israel. Thank you for your Tax relief, and thank you for our energy independence.

Most of all though…THANK YOU for taking a damn rotten job that you never had to take!! Thank you for caring enough for this country to want to try and make a difference. Thank you for showing America how little Career Politicians actually work for their constituents; and for showing us how much those politicians despise you for showing America how easy it is to build a great nation, rather than rape her to line their own pockets and stock portfolios.

Thank you for allowing us to experience a President that wasn’t a lifelong politician, but a lifelong American. THANK YOU MR PRESIDENT… YOU DID YOUR BEST…”

Foster and Catchings wikipedia entry

Pre-Keynesian American underconsumption theorists.

In their undergraduate years at the turn of the century, William Trufant Foster and Waddill Cathings had been classmates together in at Harvard.  Foster went on to become an college educator, while Catchings had gone into finance.  In 1919, they came together again at the Pollack Foundation for Economic Research – Catchings providing the economic expertise,  Foster providing the expository rhetoric – and promptly set about addressing the post-war slump.

Foster & Catchings main theses were worked out in Profits (1925) and Money (1928).  They argued that insufficient consumer income is what leads to collapses in consumption and hence profits, prices and outputs.  They base their theory on a primitive but clumsy version of a multiplier-accelerator mechanism.   If retained company profits are hoarded (rather than being lent out), then consumer income is insufficient for consumers to absorb output. They argued that even if the firm invests this hoarded money itself (and thus pays the income out to workers), the problem is not solved: increased investment increases demand, yes, but it also pushes out output even further.  The imbalance between aggregate demand and supply, Foster and Catchings argue, will thus maintain itself.

Their theory contains a fatal flaw in the “long-run”, but seen in a short-run, dynamic manner, it is reminiscent of that of Malthus during the General Glut controversy.  They publicly offered a cash award to any economist who could prove their argument flawed. Dozens upon dozens of people submitted proofs (e.g. Friedrich Hayek, 1929), but while they acknowledged minor errors, Foster and Catchings maintained that their central thesis remained correct.  Apparently, Foster and Catchings had early sympathizers in Paul H. Douglas and Charles F. Roos.

Robert Dimand Brief Bio of WTF

The educator and heterodox monetary economist William Trufant Foster was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 18 January 1879, and died in Winter Park, Florida, on 18 October 1950. After his father’s early death, Foster worked his way through high school and Harvard University, graduating first in his class in 1901. After teaching at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, he returned to Harvard to take an A.M. in English in 1904, followed by a Ph.D. from Teachers College of Columbia University. His exceptional success as a teacher of rhetoric and a textbook author, and the vision of an ‘ideal college’ presented in his doctoral dissertation (published in 1911), led to his remarkably early promotion from instructor to full professor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1905, and his appointment at the first president of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, in 1910. Foster served as an inspector with the American Red Cross in France after US entry into the First World War. Health problems from overwork, together with controversy over his pacifism, led Foster to resign from Reed College in December 1919. He then became director of the Pollak Foundation for Economic Research, founded in Newton, Massachusetts, by his Harvard classmate Waddill Catchings, an investment banker.

Religion and the modern secular socialist state

From Biden Puts Anti-Israel BDS Activist in Charge of NSC Intel:

“Why Is Georgetown Providing a Platform for This Dangerous Group?” an op-ed in the Washington Post had asked.

The group was the Palestine Solidarity Movement, a BDS anti-Israel hate group whose conferences had a history of antisemitism, supporting Hamas and the murder of Jews.

Maher Bitar, one of the executive board members of Students for Justice in Palestine, was one of the principal organizers of the 2006 conference which was being hosted by Georgetown University’s SJP hate group. A photo appears to show him dancing in a keffiyah in front of a banner reading, “Divest from Israel Apartheid”.

Despite protests from Jewish groups, the Georgetown BDS conference went ahead

Now, Biden has picked Maher Bitar as the Senior Director for Intelligence on the NSC.

And then this, California Is Cleansing Jews From History where we find:

Kaplan reports that State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond admitted in a 2020 meeting with Jewish groups that there were problems with the creation of this group that allowed it to be politicized, and we have put systems in place to make sure they do not recur.

Nevertheless, in 2020, Gov. Newsom signed into law AB 1460, which requires that every student in the Cal State system—the largest four-year public university system in the country, of which San Francisco State is a part—take a three-unit course in ethnic studies. The governor’s decision defied the recommendations of the university’s own chancellor, members of the university’s board of trustees, and the university’s academic senate, all of whom opposed the bill, objecting to the government’s unprecedented intrusion into the university’s curriculum. The board of trustees had offered a competing proposal to require a course on ethnic studies and social justice, which would have included Jewish, LGBTQ and disability studies. Propelled by the momentum of the BLM movement in the wake of George Floyd’s killing, the governor rejected the board’s suggestion.

Then this: Is America An Enemy Of Christianity? Interesting question and with good cause:

Though the US has separation of church and state, we have long been accustomed to American Christianity being consonant with American patriotism. But close Christian observers of American life have wondered for the last couple of decades — at least in my experience — if and when the day will come when being a faithful Christian will require one to oppose the US government and the American system. As America de-Christianizes, what was once unthinkable by conservative Christians is now fast moving from the fringes to the mainstream of our thinking….

What the Left is pushing for, and is getting, in an American version of the French policy of laïcité — a hard secularism that pushes religion hard to the margins of public life. The only kind of Christianity that is going to be tolerated is Joe Biden’s kind: the sort that doesn’t contradict anything that secular progressives want. There’s a reason why our media, which heretofore furrowed its collective brow over the religious beliefs of Trump administration appointees, are falling all over themselves to highlight Biden’s Catholicism. They know Biden is tame. And they know that Biden gives cover to the anti-Christian policies that they advocate.

Religious belief of all kinds, other than some who will burn your city down if you try to  push them from practising what they believe, will be outlawed with only secular atheism left in its wake.
