Why the Republican reluctance to take on tough issues

Ever heard of Elizabeth Lauten. Well no one else in America had either until she made a passing comment on the dress sense of Obama’s older daughter. This is how it began at a Thanksgiving media event involving the President:

One minor Capitol Hill staffer thought the girls were dressed inappropriately and acted a bit churlish. And then, for some reason, she wrote about it on Facebook.

Well so what, right? These, however, were just the stories in the Washington Post. You can go to the link which will then allow you to link to each of these stories.

Indigestion over the Obama girls: Why a GOP staffer’s below-the-belt jabs were particularly wrong.

GOP aide’s online dig at Obama daughters creates backlash: A GOP staffer criticized the demeanor of Sasha and Malia Obama at the turkey pardoning.

Criticizing first kids? Still not a good idea. The ex-GOP aide who called out the president’s kids violated the unspoken staffer code.

GOP aide resigns over criticism of Obama daughters

When GOP staffer put Obama children ‘at a bar,’ it continued American tradition of trashing black females’ morality: Views like hers historically excused the abuse and disregard of human beings judged not worthy of consideration by people who also prayed.

Hill staffer quits after comments about first daughters: Those on both sides of the political aisle believed Elizabeth Lauten broke a cardinal rule when she criticized the Obama girls in a Facebook post.

Nothing classy about Elizabeth Lauten’s criticism of the Obama girls

Hill staffer Elizabeth Lauten resigns after remarks about Obama daughters

This is in a newspaper that still hasn’t mentioned Gruber, probably because their readers would be too stupid to understand the story. This is in a country that obsesses about the shooting of a thug who attacked a cop. This is a media that never mentions the IRS.

The Republicans must play a very careful waiting game on any issue that is intended to damage the standing of Democrats, and Obama in particular. This is Drudge on immigration:

Things must be brought to a slow boil. The ignorance of the American media is matched only by its willingness to inflict as much damage as it possibly can on Republicans. It makes for disastrous policy and is making much of America uninhabitable, but there is no misunderstanding what the problem is.

Open borders USA

The wrap up from The Daily Mail, ‘We’re not going to deport you’: Obama announces amnesty for millions of ‘anchor baby’ parents and illegal immigrant children – as long as they’ve been in US for five years. The headline points:

Obama addressed the nation to outline a new executive order that will allow millions of illegal immigrants to remain in the country

New plan has enraged Republicans who say he lacks the constitutional authority to pick and choose which to deport

Illegal immigrants can’t apply for months and no one who arrived after January 1, 2010 is eligible

President acknowledges that it’s a temporary fix and demands help from Congress to make it permanent

Anyone who takes advantage of the program will have to pass criminal and national security background checks, pay their taxes, pay a fee and prove their eligibility

Two Republican aides complained about an ‘amnesty’ for people who came to the US illegally and then had children here – calling their children ‘anchor babies’

And from Obama’s speech:

Now let’s be clear about what it isn’t,’ the president cautioned.

‘This deal does not apply to anyone who has come to this country recently. It does not apply to anyone who might come to America illegally in the future. It does not grant citizenship, or the right to stay here permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive – only Congress can do that.’

‘All we’re saying is we’re not going to deport you.

To which Senator Jeff Sessions has replied:

President Obama’s executive amnesty will provide an estimated 5 million illegal immigrants with the exact benefits Congress rejected, in violation of federal law. His order will grant them social security numbers, government-issued ID’s, legal status and work permits. Illegal immigrants will now be able to take jobs and benefits directly from struggling Americans in a time of high unemployment and low wages. They will be able to take jobs from Americans in all occupations, ranging from truck drivers to power company workers to jobs with city government. Many illegal immigrants will also be able to obtain green cards and become permanent residents, allowing them access to almost all federal programs, to receive citizenship and sponsor foreign relatives to join them in the U.S.

In addition to providing formal amnesty benefits for 5 million illegal immigrants, President Obama has also eliminated virtually all enforcement with respect to the other nearly 7 million illegal immigrantsin the United States. As the president’s own former ICE Director, John Sandweg said: “if you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero.”

All you have to do is get into the country from anywhere on globe — whether through the border or by overstaying a visa — and you are free to remain, take jobs and receive benefits. This year alone, the White House has released into the United States more than 100,000 illegal immigrants who simply showed up at the border and demanded entry.

Seems like the way to run a bus station but not a nation state.

ABC reports Julie Bishop’s criticism of Obama

julie bishop president

From Radio Australia of all places. They must have thought criticising Obama is a bad thing:

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop criticises US president Barack Obama for a speech in Brisbane last weekend in which he claimed climate change threatened the Great Barrier Reef. It is highly unusual for an Australian foreign minister to openly criticise a US president.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has criticised US president Barack Obama for a speech in Brisbane last weekend in which he claimed climate change threatened the Great Barrier Reef.

Speaking to 7.30 from New York, where she is attending a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Ms Bishop said “there was an issue regarding [Mr Obama’s] statement” and she could “understand the Queensland Government’s concern”.

In a speech at University of Queensland, Mr Obama had said that: “Here, a climate that increases in temperature will mean more extreme and frequent storms, more flooding, rising seas that submerge Pacific islands … The incredible natural glory of the Great Barrier Reef is threatened.”

Ms Bishop told 7.30: “We are demonstrating world’s best practice in working with the World Heritage Committee to ensure that the Great Barrier Reef is preserved for generations to come.

“I think that President Obama might have overlooked that aspect of our commitment to conserving the Great Barrier Reef.”

I also like the picture, not from RA, projecting forward, no doubt, to the day we become a Republic.

A-Day in the US

Amnesty for illegals. And if you think that’s bad, wait till Obama pits out his executive pardons in January 2017. From Drudge:

This is Phyllis Schlafly’s take: OBAMA COULD LAUNCH ANOTHER CIVIL WAR: Describes president’s amnesty plan as modern-day ‘Fort Sumter’:

Asked whether she trusts Obama to secure the nation’s southern border, she replied: “No. I don’t trust him.”

She pointed out that politicians have been promising to secure the border for years, but it remains wide open. She remembers when Obama’s predecessor failed to deliver on a promised border fence.

“I remember seeing George W. Bush’s photo-op,” Schlafly said. “He was signing the law to build the fence. And they never built it.”

She is also skeptical of the idea that beneficiaries of Obama’s amnesty will be barred from receiving health-care subsidies.

“No, I don’t think he will deny them Obamacare,” she said.

So is the president lying?

“I think he lies about everything,” Schlafly said.

Obama knows so little about so much

This is what you don’t get in the mainstream press in the United States:

THE Queensland government, as host of last weekend’s G20 summit, is incensed over what it sees as an ill-informed, insulting speech from Barack Obama about climate change, the Great Barrier Reef and coal.

The idea that there might be an ounce of honesty in what Obama says or does is one of those myths that will not die. He has only one ambition, which is to do down our way of life and wreck it as comprehensively as he can. His mentor was Saul Alinski, his closest associate was the “weatherman” Bill Ayers, and he sat in the front pew of Reverend Wright’s church for twenty years. And if that doesn’t convince you, why don’t you just look at his economic, immigration, defence and foreign policies. Is it just chance, do you think, that every single thing he has done has made matters worse?

I only wish that being insulting and ill-informed was the worst of it. It is also interesting to see the issue of climate change and energy come up in this same story.

Tony Abbott told the G20 session that the “four-fifths” of the developed world that had used fossil fuels for economic growth could not now deny “the other fifth” access to coal to generate electricity for the hundred million people who were without it.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi picked up on the theme yesterday in his speech to federal parliament, calling for new-generation energy “that does not cause our glaciers to melt”. . . .

French President Francois Hollande, the host of the Paris climate change conference next year, spoke for eight minutes exclusively on climate change. Mr Modi talked of the need for access to electricity for the world’s poor.

Meanwhile the ill-informed President of the United States brought this message with him:

Mr Obama said on Saturday that climate change “here in Australia” means “longer droughts, more wildfires” and “the incredible natural glory of the Great Barrier Reef is threatened”.

He knows so little about so much.

As bad as it is there is worse to come

Depending on America since the retreat of Britain has had its imperfections but we are in a whole new world since the coming of the Age of Obama. The article opens with a listing of the horrors of American foreign policy under Obama before coming to this:

Is there a pattern or unifying conviction that underlies such disarray?

Yes says Bret Stephens, the Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign affairs columnist. In “America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder,” he argues that the many debacles of the last six years — with the striking exception of the White House’s dogged intervention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — are tied together by Obama’s determination to scale back America’s global responsibilities. “America’s retreat — or what the Obama administration prefers to call ‘retrenchment’ — is the central fact of this decade, just as the war on terror was the central fact of the last decade,” contends Stephens. It is setting the stage for far worse.

I don’t think America has become more isolationist but it is willing to elect an incompetent and ignorant chief executive who has left wreckage everywhere he has turned. If an open borders policy doesn’t frighten the electorate enough to abandon the Democrats, I am at a loss to imagine what now will. The world map in 2114 will look nothing like the one we see today.

To grube – to tell people you lied to how stupid they were to believe what you said

obama duped the public

It’s one thing to fool the voters since our political elites already think we’re stupid but it is another to fool the media which, whatever the rest of us think of them, they think of themselves as always the smartest people in the room, even when Obama is in the room at the same time. They share the same delusions.

But now with Gruber having let the cat out of the bag, the wounds are festering and even the media is starting to report an issue that has gone viral. They may no longer be acting in unity to hide this issue from the public. This may be the issue that finally breaks the logjam of the hold on the media by the left and not just in the US. It still hasn’t reached the three major networks but perhaps it is only a matter of time. Do people really want to remain in ignorance of so much that affects their lives?

This is from The Chicago Tribune, you know, Barack’s adopted home town: Smug Obama administration duped the public.

Until Gruber’s videos appeared, it was hard to prove the administration actually intended to deceive voters when it rammed through the legislation on straight party-line votes. Perhaps the president was simply making statements he believed to be true but later turned out to be false. That’s not lying. That’s an honest mistake.

The Gruber videos are devastating because they say flatly that the deception was premeditated and was used self-consciously to pass the law. The professor goes further and says the law would have been defeated if its central provisions had been known to voters.

And then there’s Charles Krauthammer, in the Washington Post as always so nothing new there, but this time with a story that really may penetrate the fog of resistance, The Gruber Confession. The article points out that Gruber may by himself sink Obamacare because he has stated on tape the interpretation of the Act that if upheld by the Supreme Court, will mean that Obamacare cannot function. It will sink immediately if it upholds that using the word “states” in the act really does refer to the states. And as for Democrats and the politics of the left:

It’s refreshing that “the most transparent administration in history,” as this administration fancies itself, should finally display candor about its signature act of social change. Inadvertently, of course. But now we know what lay behind Obama’s smooth reassurances — the arrogance of an academic liberalism, so perfectly embodied in the Gruber Confession, that rules in the name of a citizenry it mocks, disdains and deliberately, contemptuously deceives.

There are layers of tar to go with the feathers to come. But this is one administration whose ability to convince anyone of anything has disappeared, absolutely disappeared. No one will ever trust it again. The Senate majority leader (or at least he is until January) wants Obama to delay introducing his immigration changes until after the money is appropriated by Congress. He may no longer think a shutdown of Congress would irritate the community but might even be welcomed. Who would have thought you would see this, Harry Reid Urges White House to Delay Immigration Executive Action?

House Speaker John Boehner . . . said a government shutdown could not be ruled out. Several rank-and-file Republicans are already threatening to try and hold up the spending bill over immigration.

He said all options were on the table, declaring: “We’re going to fight the president tooth and nail if he continues down this path.”

A government shutdown was not the preferred route, Boehner said, but he said it could not be ruled out.

“Our goal here is to stop the president from violating his own oath of office and violating the Constitution,” Boehner said. “It’s not to shut down the government.”

Reid first expressed his concern about immigration during an off-camera conversation with a CNN producer, saying: “I’d like to get the finances of this country out of the way before he does it, but that’s up to him.”

Sometimes you just have to let them shut the Washington Monument and a few national parks for a few weeks if you are going to save your country. With a zero-credibility president who still has an agenda of his own, there are certainly interesting times ahead.

As for the man who let the cat out of the bag, his name should now become a noun and a verb. A gruber (n.) is someone who grubes (v.i.) – they tell people who they lied to how stupid they were to believe what they were told.

Obama and the vanguard party of the left

Sultan Knish has a quite insightful column on Obama versus the Democrats which he sees as a war to the death between “the-win-power-by-saying-anything-that-gets-votes-whether-you-mean-it-or-not” wing of the party versus “The Progressives” who actually have a radical far left agenda that if people actually knew what it was would avoid Democrats like the plague. The Progressives are our modern version of the Bolshevik cell that lies in wait for their moment. The win-by-saying-anything group just likes the power and the perks and riches that come with it. As for the Progressives:

Their goal is to transform the country. If they can do that by winning elections, they’ll win them. But if they can’t, they’ll still follow their agenda.

And most importantly, they care not in the slightest if they ruin the Democrat Party and make it unelectable for a few years so long as they can put their own agenda in place. Here is where we are:

It’s not just about Obama’s ego. His campaigns and his time in office were meant to showcase the progressive position that the only way to win was from the left. Obama and his people would rather radicalize the Democratic Party and lose, than moderate their positions and stand a chance of winning. The left isn’t interested in being a political flirtation. It nukes any attempt at centrism to send the message that its allies will not be allowed any other alternative except to live or die by its agenda. Obama deliberately sabotaged Reid’s campaign plans, as Reid’s chief of staff discussed, because that strategy involved disavowing Obama and his legacy. In the time honored tradition of the radical left, Obama would rather have a Republican senate than a Democratic senate won by going to the center.

You cannot compromise with the Vanguard Parties of the Left. They are never your friends. In just the same way that those who thought they could control Hitler back in 1933 found they could not, the Democrats are finding they cannot control Obama. Whether any one else will be able to is the question that will be answered over the next two years. My own guess is that they will not in large part because they don’t really understand what they are dealing with.

The damage a president can do especially if that’s his aim

obama netanyahu

From Scott Johnson at Powerline, HOW TO UNDERSTAND OBAMA’S IRAN DIPLOMACY.

I think the easiest way to understand Obama’s diplomacy is this. Assume that Obama believes Iran should have nuclear weapons and would like to facilitate the mullahs’ nuclear weapons program. This assumption is the Occam’s Razor that clarifies what might otherwise be obscure. The assumption may not be correct, but it should prove a handy guide to coming attractions.

It is the same for every policy. If you think of Obama’s aim as harming the white American middle class, and doing as much damage as possible to American foreign policy interests, you will never go wrong in guessing what he will try to achieve. There are plenty of obstacles so he cannot do anything he wants, but he does as much as he can. The American people elected their bitterest enemy to the White House, and as obvious as it is, no one in public life will say so loudly and clearly. Is it respect for the presidency, uncertainty about Obama’s actual motives or fear of exposing just how damaging a presidential system can be?

Everyone is so panicky for no reason – just ask Obama how well everything is going

No one would go to West Africa anyway, but would you go to the US? Matt Ridley is expert in people worrying about trifles that never amount to much but even he is worried about where this could go. No government tells the truth if it will harm their prospects, but Obama has taken lying beyond anything seen before in large part because he has a media that lets him.
