Make this make sense if you can

Here is the headline: Pope Francis reneges on offer to take in Christian refugees, and here is the story:

A Christian brother and sister from Syria felt blessed to have been among the dozen refugees selected to start a new life in Italy — but now say their savior, Pope Francis, abandoned them on a Greek island, according to a report.

Roula and Malek Abo, who had been housed in a refugee camp on Lesbos, said they thanked their lucky stars when they found out the Vatican had selected them during the pontiff’s visit to the island last week, the Daily Mail reported.

Their dreams were shattered, though, when they were informed the following day that they would not be traveling to Rome. Instead, three Muslim families were taken.

The only sense one can make is if I make some kind of assessment of in whose interests the Vatican is being run. And those interests do not look like the interests of Christians.

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”

It was exactly 400 years today that William Shakespeare, once a well-known playwright across the English-speaking world, shuffled off this mortal coil. I therefore thought we should mark the occasion. How I will do it is by noting that I picked up a secondhand copy just yesterday of Lytton Strachey’s Books and Characters: French & English which has a wonderful essay on “Shakespeare’s Final Period”, although the reason I actually bought the book was because it was dedicated to John Maynard Keynes. But what I found so interesting about the essay was that it assumed intimate knowledge of about a dozen Shakespearean plays of which for me, anyway, many were way off my own most important dozen. I have to admit I am almost entirely unfamiliar with Cymbeline or The Winter’s Tale or Timon of Athens although with the others he discussed I was pretty au fait. I suspect few enduring a modern education would even recognise these titles never mind know a thing about the plays. I, on the other hand, am from a different era. Today it is Tony Soprano rather than Titus Andronicus anyone would be more likely to know.

But this short post is about Shakespeare’s death and the article was about whether he had become more content with life even as he aged, which apparently was a common view in 1906 when the article was written. Based on an ability to properly date the order in which the plays were written, which had been discovered just around that time, Strachey thinks it is nonsense and goes about showing there is no genuine sign that Shakespeare had entered upon a serene and contented existence as his life drew to an end. If anything, he says, he just got bored with trying to write about real people in real circumstances and therefore went off on various imaginative excursions so that he could write beautiful poetry but didn’t have to worry whether his characters were realistic and the plot lines made sense. The Tempest, as he says, ought to be play about Prospero’s revenge but ends up being mostly a love story.

Anyway, however Shakespeare spent his final years, they ended on this day four centuries ago. It is a miracle that so many of his plays have been preserved and one may only hope that 400 years from now there will be others to commemorate and honour the anniversary of his death.

The most politically incorrect letter ever written

This letter was a hoax of sorts, or so it says at the start, posted somewhere on the internet as a response from Oxford to students attending as Rhodes Scholars to remove the statue of Oxford Benefactor Cecil Rhodes. Here’s how the letter begins.

Dear Scrotty Students,

Cecil Rhodes’s generous bequest has contributed greatly to the comfort and well being of many generations of Oxford students – a good many of them, dare we say it, better, brighter and more deserving than you.

This does not necessarily mean we approve of everything Rhodes did in his lifetime – but then we don’t have to. Cecil Rhodes died over a century ago. Autres temps, autres moeurs. If you don’t understand what this means – and it would not remotely surprise us if that were the case – then we really think you should ask yourself the question: “Why am I at Oxford?”

Oxford, let us remind you, is the world’s second oldest extant university. Scholars have been studying here since at least the 11th century. We’ve played a major part in the invention of Western civilisation, from the 12th century intellectual renaissance through the Enlightenment and beyond. Our alumni include William of Ockham, Roger Bacon, William Tyndale, John Donne, Sir Walter Raleigh, Erasmus, Sir Christopher Wren, William Penn, Samuel Johnson, Robert Hooke, William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Emily Davison, Cardinal Newman. We’re a big deal. And most of the people privileged to come and study here are conscious of what a big deal we are. Oxford is their alma mater – their dear mother – and they respect and revere her accordingly.

And what were your ancestors doing in that period? Living in mud huts, mainly. Sure we’ll concede you the short lived Southern African civilisation of Great Zimbabwe. But let’s be brutally honest here. The contribution of the Bantu tribes to modern civilisation has been as near as damn it to zilch.

And then it gets worse.

Inexplicable

How can such a party come into existence after all we have learned? From AFP: German right-wing AfD party under fire over anti-Islam comments:

Germany’s right-wing populist AfD party drew heavy fire Monday after two of its leaders labelled Islam incompatible with the country’s values and constitution.

The three-year-old Alternative for Germany party, which harshly opposes Chancellor Angela Merkel’s liberal refugee policy, plans to adopt an anti-Islamic manifesto at a conference this month.

The chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany Aiman Mazyek charged that “the AfD is riding a wave of Islamophobia”.

“It is the first time since Hitler’s Germany that there is a party which discredits and existentially threatens an entire religious community,” he told public broadcaster NDR.

The opposition Greens’ senior lawmaker Konstantin von Notz accused the AfD of trying to “deliberately turn Islam into a bogeyman to capture voters”.

They were reacting to AfD deputy leader and member of the European parliament Beatrix von Storch who had said that “Islam is a political ideology that is incompatible with the German constitution”.

She had also said her party would call for a ban on Islamic symbols such as minarets on mosques, muezzins’ calls to prayer and full-face veils, speaking to newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

The anti-immigrant AfD made strong gains in three regional elections last month, profiting from public fears over an influx of more than one million migrants and refugees who arrived last year.

Another AfD deputy leader, Alexander Gauland, has warned of an “Islamisation of Germany” and said that “Islam is not a religion like Catholic or Protestant Christianity but intellectually always associated with the takeover of the state”.

The secretary general of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, warned that such statements are “contrary to European values”.

“It is right and necessary to have a debate about important issues like integration and education, but to depict Islam as a threat to our society is wrong and hurtful to millions of European Muslims,” he said in a statement.

“We need to strengthen the respect for common values in Europe, not to create new divisions in society.”

Merkel’s top spokesman Steffen Seibert reiterated Monday the government’s often-stated position that “Islam is now, without doubt, a part of Germany”.

Germany is home to four million Muslims, and many of the country’s most recent arrivals adhere to the faith.

You can be whatever you want to be

The heading is Dictatorship Of The Dimwits but it’s much much worse than that. Before you watch the video, find out first what you will witness.

This is an extraordinary short video making the rounds. A 5’9″ white guy goes onto the University of Washington campus and asks students to explain why he isn’t a 6’5″ Chinese female child in first grade. They can’t do it. They are so afraid of being judgmental, and offending against the sacred dogma of Self-Definition that they are unable to deny anything he claims about himself. (Not strictly true: one woman of the bunch politely doubts that he is 6’5″.) You have to watch this:

Since they all know he is not a 6’5″ first grade Chinese female student what does it mean that they will not say so?

The tribalisation of the West

From Victor Davis Hanson, Sleeping Dogs Are Waking, the sleeping dogs of ethic and racial division.

The Obama era has reawakened ethnic chauvinism and multiculturalism in a way we have never quite seen before in recent American history. Who would have thought that in 2009, the racist firebrand, tax-delinquent, anti-Semite, former FBI informant, and conspiracist Al Sharpton would become the chief presidential advisor on race, or that the attorney general would refer to blacks as “my people” and the rest of the country as “cowards,” or that the president would urge Latinos to “punish our enemies,” or that something chauvinistic called “Black Lives Matter” would consider a corollary ecumenical “All Lives Matter” as racist, or that “white privilege” would be a slur hurled against the largely working white classes by mostly minority and white elites in academia, politics, journalism and the arts?

Coupled with years of open borders, a failure to enforce immigration laws, hostility to integration and assimilation, and racial preferences in hiring and admissions, the Obama administration in just over seven years has nearly achieved its aims of racializing the American experience to such a degree that everyone must now belong to his particular tribe first, and begrudgingly remain an American a distant second.

Obama may be the worst president ever, but only those of us with enough historical memory can even tell. Soon all that will be gone, and the whiners who write the history will think their new civilisation of ethnic identity and tension is a higher achievement than what will by then have completely gone. His final words are “far, far worse is on the horizon” and on this score he is almost certainly right.

Modern education

Somehow these two stories belong together. First this: University students are struggling to read entire books. And then this, Professional Educator: Grades, Showing Up On Time Are A Form Of White Supremacy:

While the traits listed [being rigorous and punctual, speaking grammatical English] may simply be regarded as positive traits for success in the modern world, Dr Heather Hackman described them as traits chosen and emphasised to favour whites to the detriment of non-white groups, who are forced to assimilate ‘white’ traits such as good discipline and goal orientation or else be left behind. Hackman’s solution, then, is to train teachers to move away from all these aspects of ‘white privilege’ in education. She routinely touted the benefits of collective assessments (measuring student learning at the class level instead of determining whether each student knows the material), as well as eliminating all school grades entirely.

There is more craziness in the world than you can ever believe and it is getting worse and not better.

Fifty years too late

Ohio State Shuts Down Student Occupation after Arrests, Expulsion Threatened: “‘If you refuse to leave, then you will be charged with a student code of conduct violation,’ [Ohio State Vice President Jay Kasey] said. ‘If you are here at 5:00 a.m. we will clear the building and you will be arrested.’ He added, ‘We will give you the opportunity to go to jail for your beliefs.’”

Or to be more explicit and to the point:

Kasey had little patience for it. “We told you, and all we can do is be honest with you. If you’re still here at 5:00, our current philosophy is, we are going to take you out — escort you out of the building and arrest you. You will be discharged from school also,” he noted.

Confused, one of the students asked, “discharged as in…?”

“Expelled,” Kasey answered flatly.

I was there at the dawn and while I was among those who might have camped out in the dean’s office had they done it where I went to school, my belief, then as now, was that we were let off too easy.

George Soros is more dangerous than Angela Merkel

Naturally in an English paper, this time The Daily Express. You won’t find this mentioned in the US. EU is in ‘mortal danger’ of collapse, warns billionaire global finance guru George Soros unless it spends £24 BILLION EVERY YEAR to tackle the migrant crisis.

Mr Soros said EU leaders needed to agree a surge in funding to deal with the influx of more than a million refugees flooding into Europe.

He suggested that at least €30 billion (£24 billion) a year would be needed and said Europe should be looking to accept between 300,000 and 500,000 a year.

Mr Soros said: “Thirty billion might sound like an enormous sum, but it is not when viewed in proper perspective.

“First, we must recognise that a failure to provide the necessary funds would cost the EU even more.

“There is a real threat that the refugee crisis could cause the collapse of Europe’s Schengen system of open internal borders among 26 European states.

“The asylum seekers are desperate.

“Legitimate refugees must be offered a reasonable chance to reach their destinations in Europe.

“EU leaders need to embrace the idea that effectively addressing the crisis will require “surge” funding, rather than scraping together insufficient funds year after year.

Soros is channelling immense amounts of money to every presidential candidate in the US – Democrat or Republican – except for Donald Trump. This is what he wants and every candidate will give him that except for one.
