It’s not “pandemic legislation”

There is a “can’t-happen-here” attitude even as it is happening. A just-in story in The Age: New pandemic legislation passes Victorian Parliament’s lower house. The legislation has nothing to do with medical care. It is entirely about Daniel Andrews taking power into his own hands. Here’s the story.

Victoria’s new pandemic laws passed State Parliament’s Labor-controlled lower house on Thursday evening following two days of heated debate in which MPs hurled abuse at one another across the chamber.

Earlier in the day, Premier Daniel Andrews responded to criticism from the president of the Victorian Bar saying the claim by Christopher Blanden, QC, that the government had not properly consulted the barristers’ peak body about the legislation was “factually wrong”.

[The issue is NOT whether there was proper consultation. The issue is whether such legislation should ever be introduced into a free society.]

The government’s proposed pandemic legislation will replace state of emergency powers which expire on December 15, curtailing the chief health officer’s powers, giving the premier the authority to declare a pandemic and the health minister the role of making public health orders.

[And what follows from the Premier declaring a state of emergency? Are these provisions acceptable is the issue.]

The bill passed by 51 votes to 26.

The opposition, many crossbench MPs, and legal groups have raised concerns about various aspects of the legislation, including what they say is a lack of checks and balances on the government’s powers.

[More detail would be welcome.]

Mr Blanden on Wednesday described the proposed laws as “appalling” and claimed the government had “grossly misrepresented” its consultation with the Victorian Bar.

He said the Department of Health officials conducted a 45-minute online meeting with him to discuss the issue of whether the chief health officer should retain the authority to declare a pandemic.

“That’s factually wrong,” Mr Andrews said. “There’s a lot of [online Microsoft Teams] meetings going on at the moment, we’re in a global pandemic. I’m terribly sorry if a Teams meeting wasn’t sufficient, there’s literally hundreds of thousands of Teams meetings.

The upper house will debate the bill in Parliament in three weeks and it is likely to pass with the approval of Samantha Ratnam, Fiona Patten and Andy Meddick, who were involved in the negotiations.

And there you have it. Why are so few people concerned? Why is The Age unconcerned?

America Gone Mad

This is part of Conrad Black discussing America Gone Mad.

No one could foresee that, just 30 years after the hammer-and-sickle was hauled down over the Kremlin and Russia reverted to the European borders that it had held when it was only the Grand Duchy of Muscovy 400 years ago, the international Left would have taken over the conservation and ecology bandwagon and manipulated the leading capitalist countries into a savage assault on their own economies to reduce carbon emissions. No one could have anticipated that some African Americans would have celebrated their emancipation and the elevation of an African American president by lionizing antiwhite extremists and producing policing policies that have facilitated a vertiginous spike in violent crime in America.

Even two years ago no one could have foreseen that the Chinese would inadvertently release a virus which the entire Western world would obligingly respond to by shutting down almost their entire economy for a year and increasing the money supply by 30 percent—producing an economic upheaval that will linger for a long time. And there is no precedent for the completely avoidable and shaming debacle of the American defection from its own alliance and helter-skelter flight from Afghanistan, leaving thousands of desperate people of many nationalities who had relied upon the United States, to fend for themselves against the new terrorist regime that seized power there (and $85 billion of U.S. military hardware along with it).

No one could have foreseen that the egregious chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley—who appears to have been stuffed into his over-decorated tunic and bears more evidences of military distinction than victorious five-star combat generals George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, and Dwight D. Eisenhower combined—would promise his Chinese analogue that he would warn him if President Trump intended to attack China, that he agreed with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that his commander-in-chief (Trump) was insane, that he would proudly help institute “diversity, equity, and inclusion” lessons in the Armed Forces, and that he would inform a congressional committee while under oath that he had warned Biden about the dangers of his Afghan policy (warnings the president professes not to have received).

And this is how he ends.

Despite my substantial agreement with their concerns, I vigorously attempted to defend the American interest. The best I could do was to remind them that the United States was the most successful country in history and always worked out its problems and that even after three more years of this ramshackle defeatism, a nation as great as America could quickly be restored to its traditional confidence and solidity. I was not entirely persuasive: my knowledgeable British and European friends not only do not think America is back, they think it has gone mad.

I just think its leadership has sold out to the Chinese who must be amazed at such an array of traitorous scum at the top of the American political system.

Do the clowns at The Age even know what freedom is?

Here is this story about the totalitarian takeover of Victoria by its utterly mad premier: Victorian Bar slams ‘appalling’ new pandemic laws and there in the middle of the story we find this as an insert in the midst of the story:

Victoria edges closer to freedom

The Victorian government has announced changes to the road map from Friday, October 29, as the state will reach its 80 per cent double dose vaccination target almost a week ahead of schedule. Here’s how some of the restrictions will ease when the 90 per cent double dose vaccination target is reached for people 12 years and over – now predicted to occur around Wednesday, November 24.

Victoria is in no sense whatsoever edging towards anything other than a fascist state. The actual situation is that we are moving very far away from freedom and into government by decree. This is actually where we now find ourselves.

The president of the Victorian Bar has slammed the state’s new pandemic legislation as “appalling” and claims the government “grossly misrepresented” its consultation with the barristers’ peak body.

Christopher Blanden, QC, said the new laws, designed to replace sweeping state of emergency powers, would give the Premier unprecedented power with little to no checks and balances.

“Stasi police would have been more than happy with the range of powers if they were given it,” Mr Blanden told The Age. “It’s extraordinary.”

Meanwhile, to the extent they are able, the Victorian Opposition has come to life: Victorian parliament descends into chaos ahead of public health laws debate.

Victorian politicians have screamed at each other and yelled insults across the table during a heated discussion over proposed pandemic laws that are set to bring unprecedented powers to the Victorian Premier and Health Minister if passed this week.

Premier Daniel Andrews was labelled a “dictator” during the chaotic screaming match between Labor and Liberal politicians amid a push to delay debate of the new pandemic powers the government is hoping to rush through parliament over three days this week.

The proposed laws, introduced to state parliament on Tuesday, would give the Premier power to declare a pandemic for three months at a time and allow Health Minister Martin Foley to sign off on public health orders without the approval of the chief health officer.

The insanity of it all is that I know far too many on the Labor side of things who do not see any problem whatsoever in anything Andrews has done or is doing. These may be the most politically ignorant people I have ever met and there are plenty of them out there.

And since you won’t find this anywhere else, these are some of the details of the proposed legislation via Opposition Leader  Matthew Guy.

Victorians are today witnessing the most extreme, dangerous and excessive laws ever brought before our state.

In one Bill, Daniel Andrews is attempting to sideline the Victorian Chief Health Officer and grant himself unchecked power to declare a State of Emergency and decree health orders based on an individual’s age, gender, sexual orientation and political belief or activity.

This legislation would remove any consideration of the impact of lockdowns, restrictions or penalties on equal opportunity or human rights laws, bypass Cabinet and Parliamentary approvals and place enormous power in the hands of one person.

Under these laws Victorians face a $21,909 fine for failing to wear a face mask and business a $109,044 fine if a customer fails to check-in properly.

These new laws aren’t about streamlining State of Emergency powers but about making it easier for the State Government to control people’s lives.

Daniel Andrews wouldn’t be passing these laws unless he planned on using them. The thought of handing even more power to the person who got us into this mess is simply unacceptable.

This extreme legislation is a threat to every Victorian family, small business and local community. It must be stopped.

The Victorian Liberal Nationals will stand up for Victorians and oppose this dangerous legislation.

The Age fires Michael Leunig for contradicting the covid narrative

Freedom of the press also apparently includes the right to suppress news you do not want anyone to hear. This, however, is astounding: The Age cartoonist Michael Leunig axed after anti-Dan Andrews cartoon. The story is from The Oz.

Leunig was axed from his prized Monday editorial page position by The Age, after it dumped a cartoon in which he compared Daniel Andrews’ threat of “vaccine mandates” for Victoria to the famous Tiananmen Square vision of “Tank Man”, the Beijing dissenter who defiantly faced off against the Chinese government’s tanks in 1989.

Leunig cartoon

“Gay feels this type of cartoon is not in line with public sentiment, and The Age’s readership, who it does seem are largely in favour of the Andrews Covid narrative. But my job is to challenge the status quo, and that has always been the job of the cartoonist.”

That is, Age readers refuse ever to see or read anything that contradicts what they already prefer to believe. It is obviously the editor’s responsibility to ensure this never happens. Leunig, however, has a different view.

“If what Gay says is right, I don’t much want to work for the sorts of readers who are so censorious. It seems that at The Age in particular, you can’t go near the Covid story except in a way that’s supportive of the Victorian government’s handling of it. And if you’re not supportive, that’s reason enough for you to be cancelled.”

Speaking of Dan Andrews, and also from The Oz.

Good thing he doesn’t work for The Age.

Putin is worried the West is becoming like Russia in 1917

Maybe he’s just trying to be funny, but he did say it: Putin Warns Wokeness Is Destroying The West: It Happened In Russia, It’s Evil, It Destroys Values.

Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed during a speech on Thursday the far-left woke ideology that he said is causing societal ills throughout the Western world, saying that it is no different than what happened in Russia during the 1917 revolution….

“We see with bemusement the paralysis unfolding in countries that have grown accustomed to viewing themselves as the flagships of progress,” Putin said during an event where he spoke for a few hours. “Of course, it’s none of our business or what is happening, the social and cultural shocks that are happening in some countries in the Western countries, some believe that aggressive blotting out of whole pages of your own history, the affirmative action in the interest of minorities, and the requirement to renounce the traditional interpretation of such basic values as mother, father, family, and the distinction between sexes are a milestone … a renewal of society.”

Putin said that Western nations had a right to do whatever they wanted to do but that “the overwhelming majority of Russian society” rejected these new ways of thinking.

And if you have any doubts about how serious he was, read it through. His level of disgust with what is going on is near on identical to my own.

A communist takeover of the United States

If you would like to understand what is taking place in the United States, these two virtually adjacent stories at Lucianne.com will provide you with most of what you need to know. First this:

SNAP (food stamps) benefits have largest
increase in history

Washington—The Biden administration has approved a significant and permanent increase in the levels of food stamp assistance available to needy families—the largest single increase in the program’s history. Families in October have seen the average benefits for food stamps (officially known as the SNAP program) rise more than 25 percent above pre-pandemic levels. The increased assistance is indefinite to all 42 million SNAP beneficiaries. The aid boost was first reported by The New York Times and the details were confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Department of Agriculture. They were formally announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The aid boost is being packaged as a major revision

And then this:

Biden burying businesses under red tape;
more rules on the way

President Biden accelerated the regulatory state on his first day in office by ordering agencies to consider aspirational but vaguely defined goals and benefits when imposing new rules on businesses large and small. The order greenlighting regulations even when the benefits “are difficult or impossible to quantify” sent shudders down the spines of CEOs. They fear business growth will be smothered in pursuit of vague objectives such as “human dignity” and “the interests of future generations.” “It is the most aggressive thing I’ve ever seen by an administration,” said Doug Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, a right-leaning economic think tank. “It’s one thing to put out

The American economy is disappearing under the weight of impossible regulations while welfare is replacing work as the means for paying the bills. This is socialism American style. And if you wish to understand the dynamic, let me again suggest you have a look at my article in Quadrant on The True Meaning of Conservative Thought.

The socialist takeover of the American economy

image.png

What we are getting is an economy that will be shaped and driven by government decisions rather than by business decisions. The size of the public sector will increase relative to the private sector, but that is the very aim of what is being done. Taxes replace business revenue as the means to finance these decisions. Just expect real personal incomes to fall, but economic statistics to show a continual improvement in the pseudo-outcomes GDP and employment data provide. The rise in prices will be about the only stat that will remain available to show something is wrong, because there will be no disguising the fall in living standards that is to come.

And where America leads, others in “the free world” are sure to follow.

Even this is not peak absurd but surely it’s getting close

Sometimes the things you read are so absurd that they just cannot be true. From Biden Banking Nominee Scrubs Karl Marx Paper From Résumé. Try to find something more outrageously insane than this:

President Joe Biden’s pick for the nation’s top banking regulator, who received a scholarship named for Vladimir Lenin, scrubbed her résumé of a reference to a thesis she wrote on Karl Marx while a student at Moscow State University.

They even tell you what the thesis was so it’s not even hidden from those who made the decision.

Omarova, who Biden tapped to head the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, listed a paper titled “Karl Marx’s Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution in The Capital” on her résumé as recently as 2017.

Who better to regulate the American banking system than a Marxist communist graduate of Moscow State University?

Liars every one of them

Daniel Andrews walking from his car to Parliament without a mask.

If Covid really were a deadly disease that might strike anyone down at any time, no one would forget to do everything they can to prevent infection. The reality is that pretty well everyone in our governing class understands that it is pretty well all a pretence with virtually no danger whatsoever to their lives and health. There is some, but it’s minimal. You are far more likely to be in a fatal car crash than to die from Covid.

So the picture is from this story: Premier Daniel Andrews probed by police over possible mask breach. They take us for fools, and in that they may be onto something. Like with this in the US: ‘Squad’ member Rashida Tlaib is branded a hypocrite for dancing MASKLESS at indoor wedding in ‘substantial’ transmission area after scolding anti-masker Sen. Rand Paul.

Same woman who was overheard explicitly stating it is only a joke: ‘Squad’ Member Rashida Tlaib Admits Masks Are Political Theater, ‘Just Wearing It’ For Cameras. Just like at Obama’s 60th birthday party: THEY LAUGH AT YOU: Obama and Liberal Elites Spotted Maskless at His Swank Birthday Gala on Martha’s Vineyard as Rest of the Country Hunkers Down in Pandemic.

Everyone knows this is true: List Of 30 Studies Showing Face Masks Are Useless Against COVID-19. But you will do as you are told, so Daniel Andrews will face a $400 fine.

Are we stupid, or are we stupid!
